I'm Black & I'm Proud: Songs to Uplift our Community

Black people have been fighting for equality for centuries. Sometimes it's hard staying positive during these dark times. We need a reminder that black is beautiful and amazing. These five songs have helped me work throughout these times and find my strength to keep pushing forward.

Say it Loud (I'm black and im proud) - Lauren Tucker.jpg

The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are only the tip of the iceberg when addressing black lives lost to racism. At a time when blackness is seen as a weapon, it is hard to stay prideful and inspired. It’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We need a reminder of how great blackness is. Music is the soundtrack to life. Music is what has helped the black community through our greatest struggles. That is what motivated me to make the list of song that has helped me stay inspired and prideful this last week.

I’m Black & I’m Proud - James Brown

James Brown could not say it better! The funk song was written in 1968 but still speaks to many of the issues the black community faces currently. Addressing the need for black empowerment. This song is number one because right now black equates to “criminal” or “dangerous”. Instead, black people need a reminder of how amazing we are and take pride in how far we have gotten.

Alright - Lauren Tucker.jpg

Alright - Kendrick Lamar

Used back in 2015 by young activists when protesting police brutality this song became coined the “unifying soundtrack of the movement”. This song is a message of hope, telling us that we will be okay as long as we are in this together.

2Pac_-_Keep_Ya_Head_Up - Lauren Tucker.jpg

Keep Ya Head Up - 2Pac

This track uplifts and defends black women. Written when Tupac was only 21, this song addresses how black women are often stereotyped and taken advantage of in and outside of our community. Instead, Pac used this song to show the strength and the importance black women are to the community.

Lemonade - Lauren Tucker.png

Freedom - Beyoncé

The title speaks for itself. This song performed by Beyonce is meant to elevate the black people and demands “freedom” for oppressive authorities. The music video also illuminates the beauty, softness, and the strength black women exude, showcasing the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner holding pictures of their sons. Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar touch on the issues black women face as well as the social injustices the black community faces as a group.

Fight the Power - Lauren Tucker.jpg

Fight The Power - Public Enemy

We have all heard this phrase before. This song is the reminder we all might need to continue to do our part if we want to reform to the police and justice systems. This song is on my list not because of its super uplifting but because it reminded me that we have the power to change our communities and government. So than months from now, our voices are still being heard.

Who's Who: Responsible Fashion Designers Edition

The intersection between what is viewed as Sustainable Fashion and Responsible Fashion has continuously been blurred with new efforts from global luxury brands to expand their green footprint on the world.

The intersection between what is viewed as Sustainable Fashion and Responsible Fashion has continuously been blurred with new efforts from global luxury brands to expand their green footprint on the world.  In today’s age, we often shame designers for not doing enough to approach their creative process sustainably.  Doing this, however, undercuts the efforts they are making to transition their already successful businesses into eco-friendly, successful businesses.

I began this article with Sustainable Designers in mind and had to realize that a lot still needs to be done. However, responsibly approaching your creative process should be highlighted as well.  Therefore, this profile will feature the Who’s Who of Sustainable Designers, but we will also be including luxury designers and calling out their efforts at “Going Green”.

The word sustainable often has a negative light shed on it due to the thought that this clothing isn’t made of expensive materials, nor innovatively designed.  Ironically, the exact opposite is true of sustainability as the definition is: A process or state that can be maintained at a certain level for as long as wanted. (dictionary.com) This clearly speaks to quality over quantity as it is in a good enough state, when made, to last for a long time.

Our current situation in the Fashion industry has us moving in a direction where resources are becoming scarce at an alarming rate.  In order to survive, we will have to continuously find innovative ways to create by recycling.  This is where the responsibility comes into play as we are holding ourselves accountable by acknowledging that there is a problem in our industry. We are making conscious efforts to solve this problem. We have a long way to go but I believe in the power of reciprocity and evolution.

After graduating, I made the decision not to do any wholesale at all and now I make most of my money through speaking with other people and hosting workshops. My collections act as think tanks on sustainable ideas which are open source, so anyone can find all that and share it and do what they want with it.” - Patrick McDowell

NBA's Return Brings Many Questions, But A Lot of Excitement

The NBA is set to resume on July 31. Although nothing is guaranteed while COVID-19 is still out there, basketball fans finally have something to get excited about.

Giannis - Milwaukee Bucks

Basketball fans will finally have something other than “The Last Dance” and old, predetermined games to keep them entertained. The league’s board of governors and player’s union agreed to a deal in which 22 teams will resume playing on July 31 at Walt Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. There will be an eight-game conclusion for the regular season followed by a possible play-in tournament for the lower seeds before playoffs begin. Any teams within four games of the No. 8 seed by the end of the regular season will have a chance to make the playoffs via the play-in tournament, and playoffs will maintain the regular structure with four rounds of best-of-seven series.

How well teams will get back into the routine of playing is anyone’s guess. This is an unprecedented format and could lead to some huge upsets and playoff matchups we did not think we would see this season. Without question the teams who did well before the season was postponed have the most pressure on them.

The Milwaukee Bucks, who had the best record before the postponement, have superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo under contract for only one more year following the conclusion of this season. Their window might be closing fast and letting an opportunity like this slip away could be devastating.

This might be LeBron James’ final legitimate run at another championship, and another title for the Los Angeles Lakers would be sweet after some uncharacteristically embarrassing moments over the last few years from one of the league’s premier franchises.

Lakers - Michael Rosen.png

Los Angeles’ other team, the Clippers, were just starting to play at full strength and hit its stride once the pandemic hit. The Clippers were only 5.5 games behind the Lakers and looked poised to make a run at the team’s first championship, with a possible all-Staples Center playoff series along the way. This is a golden opportunity for the Clippers to capture the city’s attention and stop playing second fiddle, even if it comes under some extraordinary circumstances.

These extraordinary circumstances will no doubt tarnish the validity of this season’s champion, especially if a team like the Washington Wizards or Sacramento Kings, who did not hold a playoff position at the time of the postponement, scrap out a run to the finals. That’s a shame if a team like the Bucks or Clippers, who have waited forever for a title, not only have to celebrate that title in front of an empty arena but the validity of it is then questioned for years to come.

There are still some kinks to work out, such as possible expanded rosters due to the fact that players can refuse to participate without punishment, and nothing is certain in the COVID-19 era. But there’s reason for NBA fans to be optimistic, and we will likely be able to watch basketball much sooner rather than later.

Summer Skin Routine

As we are soaking up the summer sun, we must not forget to take care of our skin. Keeping it hydrated and glowing is the key to stay looking young. With just a few of these products or even ones of your own choice, follow this skin care routine order. You won’t be disappointed and your skin won’t be either

ee4bddcae0844502ea04c020c39e904b.jpg

Everyone wants to have beautiful, luscious skin as they grow older. In order to do that we need to ensure we take care of our skin every single day. Especially during summer when it's easy for our skin to get dry, we must make sure it stays fresh and hydrated. Here are some products that can help with your daily skin routine.

Facial Wash- Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

$9.59 at Target

This product is one that people have been using for years and customers love. We all have different skin types, some dry or oily. But this is one product that works great for all skin types and cleans off dirt, oils and make up really well while leaving your skin healthy.

xSt.Ives-Scrub-Apricot.png,qx30117.pagespeed.ic.ShLw9w5IlO - Melissa Adragna.png

Exfoliant- St. Ives Apricot Scrub

$4.49 at Target

Next up, exfoliants. It is super important to exfoliate your skin at least 1-2 times a week after you use your facial wash. One product that works great and is inexpensive is the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. It's great for sensitive skin, washes off easily and leaves your skin feeling soft and refreshed.

Facial Jade Roller

$30.00 at Sephora

Face rollers help elevate your beauty routine and leave your skin looking bright and young. It’s best to keep your roller in the freezer and use a facial serum to help it absorb into your skin better. The gentle pressure this roller provides helps leave your facial muscles more relaxed and will de-puff and sooth your skin.

SuperGlow_0_Global_03 - Melissa Adragna.jpg

Face Serum- Glossier Super Glow

$28.00 at Glossier.

This face serum holds Vitamin C and Magnesium which visibility energies your skin leaving it with a beautiful glow. The serum isn't sticky and absorbs in your skin quite nicely. Using this product with a cold face jade roller will leave your skin glowing in just a matter of days. Plus, it's great for all skin types!

Moisturizer/Sunscreen- Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

$46.00 at Sephora This is the perfect summer product. This tinted moisturizer also includes SPF protectant and make up all in one product. We love that! They also sell oil free which is great for people with more sensitive skin. This will leave your face protected, smooth and beautiful.

Lastly, don't forget to use facial sprays throughout the day. A great one to use is the Mario Badescu facial spray. The aloe, cucumber and green tea facial spray is great for summer. Aloe refreshes your skin after a day out in the sun. The green tea provides antioxidant benefits, while the cucumber replenishes and revitalizes your skin.

Summer is fun and all, but we can’t forget to give our skin the proper TLC it deserves after soaking up in the sun!

Zero Waste: Is it Possible to Live Without Producing Any Trash?

ZeroWaste. Sustainability. Save the Planet. Eco-friendly.

hello-i-m-nik-vbFC9BCo95M-unsplash - Olha Dzharyha (1).jpg

American citizen, Bea Johnson, who came up with the philosophy of "Zero Waste," knows how to live without leaving garbage. Literally: in a few years, her family collected only a half-liter jar of waste that cannot yet be recycled, mainly clothing labels. An impressive result, given that the average inhabitant of the Earth leaves behind about 400 kg of junk per year. Johnson's secret is based on a formula of five R: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot, that is, failure, reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting.

The call to completely boycott products that pollute the environment by themselves or through packaging is no coincidence in the first place in the Zero Waste philosophy. A complete list of things that Zero Waste enthusiasts never use can be frightening, but the author of the concept claims that there is an alternative to all the benefits of civilization.

It’s not the first decade that ecologists have been begging people to stop rampant buying. Living ascetically is beneficial for health, for a wallet, and the environment. Bea Johnson calculated: with the transition to Zero Waste, her family spent 40% less.

The Johnson family practically does not leave any trash, because of numerous recycling programs and modern technologies that can “digest” junk.

To upshot everything said above, the average person can conclude that environmentally-friendly existence is very much possible. Moreover, such a lifestyle is favorable not only for the planet we live in but for our wallets.

Up-cycling Old Clothes is a Fun, Easy, and Cheap Way to Revamp Your Closet

Like most people, I’m sure you hate throwing away your old clothes that are still in great condition simply because they don’t fit right anymore or are outdated. Lucky for you, upcycling is a simple and fun solution to your problem.

9a54db81266575923faa1837fec00f1e.jpg

Like most people, I’m sure you hate throwing away your old clothes that are still in great condition simply because they don’t fit right anymore or are outdated. Lucky for you, upcycling is a simple and fun solution to your problem. Repurposing old clothing is a creative and sustainable opportunity to transform out-of-date clothing into unique, stylish pieces. With retail shopping being so limited during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a great way to keep up with trends within the comfort and safety of your own home. While in quarantine, I’m sure many of us have been tasked with the question of what to do with all our newfound free time … well look no further. This extra time at home is the perfect opportunity to dig out that old t-shirt from the back of your closet and make it into something chic.

878b3bc0bd903dd99de5d7bde4432b9e.jpg

My personal favorite upcycling technique is patchwork. I love sewing cool patterned fabrics onto the pockets of my jeans or along the sleeves of my t-shirts. Another way that I love repurposing my clothes is to paint on abstract designs that are special to me. Both of these ideas are super fun ways to elevate any piece of clothing into something totally unique! I’ve even turned a pair of pants into an amazing little tank top that I wear all the time! It is such a cool feeling to wear and get compliments on clothes that you created yourself. Whether it be embroidery, patchwork, cropping, painting, or even transforming a garment into something totally new, there are endless ways to rework your old clothes. Not only is upcycling a great way to save money and pass the time during quarantine, it also contributes to sustaining a healthier environment. By reusing and reworking your old clothes instead of throwing them away, you are helping to reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in our landfills and actively paving the way for a healthier planet.

There are numerous ways to be involved in the Black Lives Matter movement. Including signing petitions and making donations. Another way to be involved is by supporting black owned businesses. There are numerous ways to support the Black Lives Matter Movement. If you don’t have a lot of extra cash right now that is completely okay, you can still make a difference by signing petitions and by using social media to advocate. Donating to the cause is another great way to be involved and donating to (verified) GoFundMe campaigns can also be very impactful. For online shopping fans, like myself, there is another great way to make an impact and that is by buying from black run businesses. A simple google search showcases many businesses selling everything from skin care products, to art and everything in between. Today I want to share five of my favorite black run businesses.

Amyang Fashun is a clothing line run by the Kanu Sisters who have roots in Sierra Leone. They sell authentic West African fashion with textiles sourced directly from Africa. The brand operates between the United States and West Africa. Their catalog boasts bright colors and vibrant patterns. Every article of clothing is specially crafted using measurements sent in from the customer. Check them out at: https://www.amyang.com/

Stuzo Clothing is a women owned Los Angeles based clothing company founded by Stoney Michelli and Uzo Ejikeme. What sets Stuzo apart from other clothing companies is that all their pieces are all gender free. Their mission is to “create a space in the fashion world where all are welcome without judgment.” Stuzo is loved by many celebrities including: Spike Lee, Tiffany Haddish, and Gina Yashere. For the entire month of June enjoy 20% off of all their collection of queer items. Shop online now: https://www.stuzoclothing.com/

The Bohemian Hookup is a metaphysical apothecary and boutique based out of Big Spring, Texas. It has been owned and run by Meaghan Monroe since 2015. Their clothing line includes printed T-shirts with quote designs as well as crocheted hats, tops, and scrunchies. However, it isn’t limited to just clothing, they have a varied catalog with everything from accessories, to bath products. Some of my personal favorites are the wire wrapped pendants, blankets and floral decor. Treat yourself to a one of a kind handmade item or give someone you love a thoughtful gift. Check out their site here: https://thebohemianhookup.myshopify.com/

IMG_7569 - Rebecca VanderKooi.jpg

Creatively Lilly is run by Kendra Lilly in Lewisville, Texas. This shop boasts vibrantly colored paintings of outdoor scenes, including: palm trees, mountains, the ocean, clouds and other breathtaking views. There are numerous different shaped paintings, canvases and even boxes and plant pots with Kendra’s trademark flashy designs. Kendra explains, “The main goal with my business is to bring happiness to as many people as possible. I truly believe everyone on this planet deserves to be happy and to have their voices heard.” Shop now at: https://www.creativelylilly.com/

IMG_7601 - Rebecca VanderKooi.jpg

Customs De Samedi run by 21 year old Stacey Samedi specializes in custom painted shoes. She is also considering adding more variety of items to her custom shop including denim or wall art as time goes on. Right now, their most popular design is white Nike AF1s with blue painted butterflies. My personal favorite is the hummingbird AF1s. Since elementary school Stacey has been an artist, so as her skills continued to grow it seemed like a natural progression to start a business selling the art that she loves. Anyone would be lucky to wear a pair of these amazing kicks, shop here: https://www.customsdesamedi.com/

Virtual Game Night

Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t be social. Have a virtual game night!

Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t be social. In the age of the internet, we’re never far away from our friends and family. Gather your group on a phone call, FaceTime, Google Hangout, Skype, Discord, or any platform you prefer (if you want to hear each other talk) and enjoy an online game night. Here is a list of games to get you started:

Skribbl

Skribbl (skribbl.io) is a free multiplayer drawing and guessing game where players earn points based on the correct answer. Although you can join a public game, users can also create a private room with up to twelve players. Creating a private room allows the host to customize words, the amount of drawing time, and the number of rounds. The player with the most points at the final round wins.

UNO

UNO With Friends (uno.robinko.eu) is a free game with multiple game play options. Including two to four players, a host can create a private, password- secured room and set some rules. Only people with the password can join the game. Players could also join ongoing UNO games in the lobbies.

Playing Cards

Games 4, Playing Cards - Victoria Namnama.png

Playing Cards (playingcards.io) has a plethora of free games that synchronizes all movements made from every player: 500, Backgammon, Checkers, Crazy Eights, Cribbage, Escoba, Euchre, Go Fish, Hearts, Match Up, Joking Hazard™, and any other standard 52 card deck game. It’s easy to create a room and share the code with your group. The room code can be shared with any number of people, but the number of players varies per game.

Paper Games

Paper Games (papergames.io) appeals to people of all ages. Focusing on games played with pen and paper, this consists of Tic Tac Toe, Connect 4, Gomoku, and Battleship. Users can find random online opponents around the world, play with friends, or create a private tournament.

Escape Room

There are a lot of different versions of online escape rooms. Some are created with Google Forms and shared for free; while users can work together to find the answers, each player must input their own answers to continue. Others -- like Puzzle Break (puzzlebreakli.com) or Enchambered (enchambered.com)— offer a more virtual and immersive experience. Prices and the amount of players vary per platform. This may also require booking a time slot in advance.

Also, in this age where gaming has become increasingly popular, several other developers and marketers can exploit this interest by seeking innovative strategies to put their games out there. This way, they can also rub shoulders with established industry players. Promoting your work to the right audience is vital here, so it would be beneficial to pair with an influencer whose reputation you can count on to market your games or toys. For example, a trusted toy influencer can make your work known to a specific target audience, and this can translate into increased visibility of your work and even higher patronage.

Use Sephora Points to Donate to George Floyd

There are many things you can do to fight with us, speak up for what is right and peacefully protest, educate others, make donations, and sign petitions.

1_ma3LBS2kMPHMHwWCCPpC_A - Theresa Lehner.jpeg

Derek Chauvin, the officer who murdered Mr. Floyd by kneeling on his neck as he begged for his life, has been charged with second degree murder. The video shows officers taking an unlawful approach that violated the protocol of Minneapolis Police Department, leaving him unable to breathe. The majority of protests over the past week have remained peaceful, with some progressing into rioting, leading to curfews being enforced in major cities.

Cobb-MinneapolisGeorgeFloyd - Theresa Lehner.jpg

George was human just like you and me. His life was taken from him too quickly and we must fight not just for our country, but for him. We must not remain silent, for remaining silent is the language of the oppressor. We must have conversations even when it may be tough, and stand up for what we believe in. Our broken hearts must show us that there is still an absurd amount of change we need to make within our country. If our government won’t give us change, then we must fight for it. We out number the leaders of our country, and we must stand up for George Floyd’s life and fight for justice.

bb19419da87448ebb56400ff7cc5ea92 - Theresa Lehner.jpg

Martin Luther King Jr. once said “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true”. There are many things you can do to fight with us, speak up for what is right and peacefully protest, educate others, make donations, and sign petitions. It’s all really that simple! One easy way you can donate is by using Sephora points. Us women rack up Sephora points fast, and you can actually use your points to make a donation. We must show them that we are one, we are all human no matter what color our skin is. They don’t want to see us smiling together as one. They don’t want to see us stand together, thus we must stand as one and change the world. It’s one love until we die!

Pull Up for Change: Beauty Brand Transparency

Sharon Chuter, the founder and CEO of UOMA Beauty, is telling brands to PULL UP! Launching the Pull Up or Shut Up challenge, Chuter asks that beauty brands be transparent about their diversity in corporate offices. Brands are now taking to their social media to reveal their percentages of black people with corporate or leadership positions.

Companies all over the country have been showing their support for the protestors, standing on the side of justice for George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, and many of the lives lost to police brutality. Some posted statements or blacked out their pages for #BlackoutTuesday using their social media platforms to show where they stand. Sharon Chuter, the founder and CEO of UOMA Beauty, is asking for the receipts! Launching the Pull Up or Shut Up 72-hour challenge, Chuter demands that beauty brands that have publicly supported the Black Lives Matter movement be transparent about their diversity in corporate offices. If they cannot “pull up” she wants brands to retract their statements. The mission of the challenge is to bring awareness to the underrepresentation of black people in corporate, more specifically leadership positions. As a part of this challenge, Chuter asks consumers not to purchase anything from their favorite beauty brands until they release its numbers of black employees.

pull up or shut up - Lauren Tucker.png

As a result of this challenge, many brands have pulled up with their percentages. UOMA, The Crayon Case, Mented, and Makeup Addiction have reported that they are 100% black! Other brands like CoverFX and Versed have revealed that they employ less than15% of black employees with corporate or leadership positions. This challenge forces companies to take accountability for their hiring practices. CoverFX plans on using the remainder of its 2020 social budget working with Black, Indigenous, and other people of color influencers and creators in hopes to diversify their company.

Why Supporting Black-Owned Beauty Brands is So Important

As news coverage and chatter dies down about the Black Lives Matter movement, you might be asking yourself what ways you can make a lasting impact. One place where the Black community has been often excluded is in the beauty industry-- and so showing your support to Black-owned beauty and makeup brands is now more important than ever.

Screen Shot 2020-06-08 at 5.09.36 PM - Grace Carlos.png

Amidst the incredible surge of attention the Black Lives Matter movement has amassed, now more than ever it is essential to support Black-owned businesses. All over the internet you can find lists upon lists of Black-owned restaurants, shops, start-ups, personal brands, and more. If you support the movement, people say, put your money where your mouth is: show your support with cold, hard cash. So, you might be asking yourself, why? What does supporting Black-owned businesses do, and why is it so important? Below is a look into how supporting Black beauty brands can make a difference.

cover-fx-beauty-ad - Grace Carlos.jpg

Like many things, it’s helpful to start with the history of the beauty industry to understand why Black people deserve support. For years, the makeup industry has ignored Black women with products neither designed for nor marketed toward people of color. Foundation and concealer shades often never come close to matching those with darker skin, and products like eye shadow or lipstick are often not pigmented enough to show up on darker skin. Additionally, makeup and hair artists are rarely trained on how to work on those with darker complexions or textured hair. This exclusion not only prevents Black women from access to products they may need or desire in order to foster confidence, but it also sends a clear message about America’s ideal form of beauty. What does a young, Black girl make of the fact that she looks nothing like any of the faces in beauty magazines, or those hailed as beautiful on television?

loreal-beauty-ad - Grace Carlos.jpg

Thankfully, important steps have been taken to combat this whitewashing of the beauty industry in the past few years. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line lead the way on this path with over 40 different shades of foundation, which has now become somewhat of a norm for other foundation lines. But more work needs to be done. This inclusion need not be trendy but a conscious, ongoing process. That’s where you come in. Supporting Black-owned makeup and beauty brands can help make up for this long-term exclusion of women of color in the beauty industry. Giving Black women the recognition they deserve in one the fastest growing industries in the world is one of the many ways we can keep the momentum going on the Black Lives Matter movement. Whether that be by buying from Black-owned brands, showing support to brands that make a purposeful inclusive effort, or speaking out against those who don’t, the inclusion of Black people in the beauty industry has the power to create a domino effect on how society envisions ideal beauty.

History Just Repeats

Living in my community, we face this struggle way too much to choose whether we are going to be Martin's or Malcolm's and in fear of letting go of our family and friends because they might become the new statistic. Each way we have chosen to protest has inched us closer to what we dream our children and grandchildren will see in the future, true equality.

Living in my community, we face this struggle way too much to choose whether we are going to be Martin's or Malcolm's and in fear of letting go of our family and friends because they might become the new statistic. Protests have been happening since the early 13th Century but for African Americans our first protest was July 28th, 1917 and is known as the Silent protest. African American men, women and children came together and marched through the streets of Midtown Manhattan in silence with only the sound of drums playing. They were mourning those who were killed in a wave of Anti-African American violence all over the nation. This was a peaceful protest nearly 50 years before the March on Washington and it sparked the protest era.

the Guardian - Maya Howard.jpg

As the years progressed so did the protests, Rosa Parks sat, Martin marched and Maclom fought for our right to be treated equally. Each way we have chosen to protest has inched us closer to what we dream our children and grandchildren will see in the future, true equality. The Black Panther Movement, formed in 1966, was originally created for the self defense of our community against police brutality. Black Panthers saw the brutality against protesters as a long history of police violence and oppression. They believed that non-violence protest would not liberate Black Americans.

People's World - Maya Howard.jpg

The Black Panther were here to serve the people and advocate for the community reform. Most Black Panthers chapters were led by women and their main focus was to focus on survival programs. Survival programs sponsored schools, legal aid offices, clothing distribution, local transportation and health clinics for the black community. All of this to say we as black people are fighting to live and be treated fairly in a world which seems to never want us to live in peace.

Today, we are repeating the same history we have been fighting for years. Whether we fight like Malcom, march like Martin, sit like Rosa, or protect and defend like the Black Panthers, we are still fighting a constant battle to show that we are human and we want to live and be treated like we treat everyone else. Our fight will continue and hopefully sometime in the future we will reach a point where Martin’s dream will truly be a reality. Until that day arrives we will continue to protest in a variety of ways. Some forms of protest the general public may understand more than others but just remember no matter how it’s done everyone is fighting for the same goal, to be treated equally.

Burberry Sessions

Fashion and music. Two of the most significant and influential industries we enjoy in today’s society become unified in an original project by the traditional and glamorous Burberry. The well renowned, reputable fashion brand has started to involve the element of live music to their social media presence. Titled “Burberry Sessions”, the much-loved brand is using their platform to promote the works of independent, unsigned artists who are up and coming in the music industry.

Screen Shot 2020-06-10 at 9.55.08 AM.png

The newest addition to Burberry’s social media archive is particularly fresh and exciting, especially during these trying times. Young artists from around the globe are now being heard and adored through their intimate virtual performances. This is all made possible through social media, as the artists record themselves performing their songs and Burberry streams the performances, mainly on their Instagram feed, so followers can watch and experience the live renditions, both parties participating from the comfort and safety of their homes.

Screen Shot 2020-06-10 at 9.55.27 AM.png

Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Electronic, Punk, Rock, and Soul, as well as combinations of these, are the genres of music that the young musicians have presented thus far throughout their sessions. Similar to the differentiating genres, the diversity of the artists themselves is not to be overlooked. Individually, each artist embodies a unique ethnic background while simultaneously representing their local geographic roots. Together, these musicians highlight the inclusivity of the Burberry brand. Like most artists do, these talented entertainers are able to portray their irreplaceable personalities through original musical creations, making it easy for fans to connect with them on a more intimate level.

Burberry has truly expanded their horizons with the Burberry Sessions project by supporting talented, growing musicians who have such spark and potential to become a success in the music industry, as well as providing a comforting distraction during the COVID19 crisis. Fashion and music are vehicles through which strangers can bond with one another, despite any cultural or physical boundaries. Using their platform to offer the gifted individuals a chance to share their passion with the world, when they otherwise may not have had the tools to do so, is what fuels our ongoing, ever-growing respect and admiration for the Burberry brand.

Increased Focus on Fashion by Athletes Could Influence the Styles of Their Fans, and Each Other

Fans may soon wear more than the jersey of their favorite athlete, they may also try to emulate their fashion choices

Giannis - Michael Rosen.jpg

Stereotypically we do not think of sports fans as a group of people who are concerned about the clothes they wear. When sports fans want to represent and emulate their favorite team and/or athlete, they do so by wearing the jersey of said athlete.

But as athletes continue to put a lot of focus into the outfits they wear when they are off the court or field, it only makes sense that the same fans who buy their jerseys would want to also emulate their fashion choices.

One of the best things about sports is that you get people from all different backgrounds and cultures, and with that comes all different tastes in fashion. An NBA player who was raised in New York City is going to dress differently than an NBA player who was raised in North Carolina, and an NBA player from Europe is going to dress completely different than any NBA player from the United States. These players could then be influencing each other’s taste in fashion, creating unique trends that originated from various styles throughout the world.

But it also means fans could be influenced by various tastes in clothing and apparel throughout the world. There aren’t many ways a young sports fan from Milwaukee would get interested in the fashion scene in Greece, but idolizing the well-dressed Giannis Antetokounmpo is certainly one way.

It wasn’t all that long ago when you would show up to the stadium and everyone in the crowd would be in suits and dresses. While that is unlikely to ever happen again, we could potentially start to see fans in the stands wearing outfits influenced by their favorite athletes.

Top 4 Trending Fashion Accessories

Modern fashion seems to be evolving with so much pace that some new trends tend to disappear even before people start getting used to it.

Modern fashion seems to be evolving with so much pace that some new trends tend to disappear even before people start getting used to it. Fashion tips are continually changing, and are either bringing back old fashion in new ways or pushing back the boundaries all together. Thus, it is understandable if fashion can get a little bit confusing sometimes. Fashion accessories are not being left out of the change. So, in this article, we will take a look at some of the current fashion accessory trends sweeping through the world of fashion.

1. Sunglasses with Colored Frames

sunglasses-2608926_1920.jpg

There’s even more reason to protect your eyes these days as the temperature keeps rising. And the latest fashion trend is providing a more colorful way to protect your eyes, with color sunglasses frames. Color has become the order of the day since people are trying out bold and adventurous combinations. These vibrant frames will add a touch of character and personality to any outfit you choose to wear. Plus, even the prescription lenses have not been left out of this trend. Click here for a wide range of fashionable eyewear from Burberry which you can get under prescription.

2. Bucket Hats

We’ve been used to baseball caps, hats, and even umbrellas as our top choices when protecting our heads and faces from the unforgiving sun. But bucket hats seem to be the new trend now. Plus, the fact that you can try these hats with almost any kind of outfit (depending on how bold you are) has made these fashionable hats a big hit among the young folks especially. They offer a laid-back feeling with an attitude that portrays boldness. Add a pair of color sunglasses frames to your bucket hat, and you’ll easily become the center of attraction.

3. Square Toe Sandals

If you think not so much can be done about sandals, then think again. A new wave of footwear is hitting the streets, and we are not talking about tall heels or bold colors. We are talking about something comparatively simple and yet classy - square toe sandals. Most of them come with a strappy finish that adds length to the legs. The only downside about these sandals is the fact that you cannot wear them every season. But summer is here now, so why don’t you try them out while you still can.

4. Chunky Boots

woman-2609573_1920.jpg

Fashion is not always about creating something new. Most of the time, it is also about bringing back the old in a new way. This is exactly what chunky boots are all about. Add a pair of these boots to your square toe sandals, and you are covered for any season - whether hot or cold. Most of these chunky boots come with low heels and a rubber platform. This makes them weigh considerably less than they look. Plus, they are surprisingly very comfy and easy on the legs. They are perfect for either a walk in the park or a fun night out with your girlfriends. And if men are bold enough, there are also chunky boots for men.

Today and Everyday, Black Lives Matter.

As America is taking a stand to fight against oppression, our nation is coming together now more than ever.

As America is taking a stand to fight against oppression, our nation is coming together now more than ever. People of all ethnicities are recognizing their differences with one another and supporting the black community as we try to make history. The BLM Protests, Black Lives Matter, are impacting not only America, but other nations. We continue to see cultures from around the world speaking up and peacefully protesting to stand in solidarity with the black community.

Celebrities, businesses, influencers, and various industries are using their public platform to speak on this unlawful oppression. The fashion industry in particular is using their voice via social media and making substantial donations to multiple funds. Warby Parker and Etsy are donating $1 million each in response to this movement. Spanx, Aritzia, Gap Inc. Family, Lululemon, and Pretty Little Thing are also providing significant financial support during this tumultuous time.

The beauty industry is also making their mark as many companies have decided to partake in the movement. Glossier, Savage X Fenty, Billie, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and E.L.F are just some of the companies who have responded and donated.

If you’re in a position to donate please try to support these companies and/or black owned businesses. The more we find solidarity in the most troubling of times, the greater our future can be.

While the COVID-19 pandemic had allowed individuals to grow a part, or even become enemies, the BLM protests are quickly rekindling our love for humanity. Speak up. Do your part. Peacefully protest. Know that we can and will make history. And, most importantly, recognize that Black Lives Matter.
