There are many amazing things about social media, but also some negative things.
Social media is simultaneously one of the best and worst things invented. Throughout this pandemic it has given us the ability to connect despite being physically distant, but cyberbullying is also a very real problem.
One thing that has been popular lately is ‘cancelling’ someone on social media. It typically happens with celebrities, and the idea is simply that if they say or do something wrong everyone trash talks them and stops supporting them. In some cases it makes sense, we all need to be held accountable. No matter how wealthy or influential someone is it doesn’t excuse their being a horrible person. Especially with regard to the many men who still have successful careers despite being accused of assault and harassment. People deserve to know the truth and justice needs to be served.
Oftentimes, people are ‘cancelled’ for ignorance, for being uneducated or for making a mistake. In cases such as this I think that taking the time to forgive and educate holds more potential for change rather than jumping right away to shunning or bullying. Imagine the difference we could make if we use the same level of energy we use to cancel someone to educate them instead. It needs to be normalized to change opinions and views after becoming educated and growing as a person.
There are times when no matter how well known, wealthy or loved someone is we as a public must step away and stop supporting them because of continued abuse of power, of racism, and hate. However, there are times when we should respond to negativity and hate with compassion, instead of jumping to conclusions. Sometimes we need to believe that people really can change and we as a public have the power to educate and change ourselves and others. We all have a voice, no matter our platform, so don’t be afraid to use your power, spread positivity, educate others, together we can make a difference for good in the world.

Rapper Tyler The Creator is just one of many celebrities and public figures who have publicly voiced support or solidarity with the George Floyd protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement. He has been seen by many attending protests and gatherings in the Los Angeles area. Tyler's support is especially helpful, as his Los Angeles store, GOLF, was vandalized in a protest earlier this week. When a Twitter user tweeted about how the store was vandalized, and that it was sad that Tyler supported the protests, Tyler took to GOLF's official Instagram account to say that the location was actually "fine." "This is bigger than getting some glass fixed and buffing spray paint off," reads the comment. "Understand what really needs to be fixed out here." Tyler later posted a 1996 photo of the Black Panthers, a famous black revolutionary socialist organization, on GOLF's Instagram account, with the caption, "BLACK FURY: keep your eyes wide and educate yourself."
Many people have tried to categorize these protests as "violent" and as excuses for people to loot and vandalize stores. However, those who support it are providing clips and evidence on social media that the people attending these protest intend for it to remain peaceful, that most of the violence is incited by the law enforcement, and that many of the looting and vandalism are actually coming from outside groups, who are seemingly masquerading as protesters.

In the past year, Summer Walker quickly rose to fame like many other musicians at a young age. As a woman, the music industry can use and abuse then throw you away if you’re not the total package. It’s not enough to just have the voice of an angle anymore, not since sex started to sell.
Many talented female artists such as Lil Kim, K Michelle, and Nicki Minaj have undergone extremely dangerous plastic surgery to their body to appeal to the music industry and its fans. Today, artists are speaking out and freely about their toxic journey in the industry that has led them to their addictions to be accepted and promises to be made a star and make it to the top. Industry professionals have brainwashed women to thinking unless they channel their creativity through drugs or make millions showing their assets, then they had no career.
The most recent is Summer Walker. She’s previously spoken out about how she’s dealt with her newfound fame and constantly being in the spotlight. On her last tour, after dealing with the performance part of her fame Summer only performed at nine of the tour dates canceling the original 29. She then took to Instagram to explain what she was feeling to her fans, “I’m not going to be able to finish this tour because it doesn’t really coexist with my social anxiety and introverted personality.”

Following this courageous act, Summer Walker decided to take a break from social media after receiving backlash on multiple occasions following her canceled tour and her public breakup with London on Da Track On May 16, it seems she is a new woman. Summer Walker is practically unrecognizable in her newest Instagram video and photos showing off what looks like a new face and body. It makes you wonder, what led her to this new transformation with a noticeably new bigger butt. Is she the newest victim of mental abuse from the industry and social media?
Is she the new Lil Kim? Why is it that the music industry teaches young black women that unless they have curves they’re talent means nothing? It is an industry that makes hit records and millions of dollars on a regular basis and young black women and their mental health pay the price.

Killing Eve Star, Sandra Oh Killing Fashion in her Latest Photo Shoot

Sandra Oh has been a household name for years, known in the industry for many roles. Most notably, for playing Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy for 10 seasons and now rogue agent, Eve Polastri, on the cat and mouse spy thriller, Killing Eve. Sandra brings a depth of talent, dedication and rawness to each character that makes her captivating to anyone lucky enough to watch her.
Killing Eve is known for its amazing fashion, especially in terms of career assassin, Villanelle, strutting her stuff in Chloé suits and J.W. Anderson jackets. Her outfits boast bright colors, unique textures, and all the latest in fashion. Sandra’s character, however, sticks to more earthy tones, baggy clothing, and turtlenecks. There is a definite clothing discrepancy between Eve and Villanelle, one of intention of course. Sandra joked, “It kills me...I go into wardrobe and see that bitch’s clothing, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get something above Uniqlo? No?” Sandra had a chance to display her own fashion brilliance in a photo shoot for Elle, Canada which will be featured in June’s issue. Sandra graces the cover in sequined Gucci, and inside there is an interview in which Sandra talks about everything from Killing Eve, to social media, and Hollywood representation. Also featured are numerous jaw dropping looks from the Elle photo shoot.
Gucci is definitely a highlight of the shoot, both the cover as well as one of the looks inside boast gorgeous sequined Gucci looks. Another look was made complete with a satin dress from Christopher Kane and heels from Versace. Still another boasts a billowing taffeta dress by Valentino. Possibly my favorite look of all is the silk shirt and leather skirt from Louis Vuitton.

Kehlani Releases Quarantine Style Music Video for “Open (Passionate)”
Kehlani's creativity shows the direction that music and live streaming is headed with other artists performing concerts on live stream during quarantine.
She just dropped her latest album and new merchandise for her fans. Kehlani clearly isn’t letting quarantine stop her from putting out some of her best content. One of her most recent music videos “Open (Passionate) was edited herself and was shot quarantine style. Steamy, sexy and visually pleasing with trees and a forest green background, the video starts off with Kehlani soaking in a Jacuzzi with a wine bottle and what seems to look like two mimosas sitting on the side of her arm. Then she’s driving down a vacant highway with her dangling gold earrings and sunglasses. There are moments which capture the eye, when she’s wearing a bold orange dress which brings out her natural beauty down to when she’s standing on top of a car dressed with a dark denim coat and brown Louis Vuitton head scarf giving her an edgy look.
Kelahni’s second part of the track “Passionate,” features her in a much more relaxing setting. She can be seen in the driver’s seat of her own car, bundled up in a two toned puffer jacket that’s grey on the outside and orange on the inside. Although things appear more serene, Kehlani’s melodious voice and captivating lyrics speak to the soul. She sings “It’s only your passion how you move by/You fallin’ head over, right outta the sky/Fatal attraction, you lay down and die/Know how you get, I know how you do it.
If you haven’t streamed Kehlani’s new album “It Was Good Until it Wasn’t,” why not go ahead and do that? After all, Kehlani said in her own words on Instagram that she wanted us to. She posted on her Instagram account 2 days ago saying “it would mean the world to me if you go stream the album, i’m already hella grateful for whatever happens but this would be really insane.”
English singer-songwriter James Blake, who is featured in Kehlani’s song “Grieving” on her new album had some words of his own. On his Instagram account he posted their song together saying “So proud to play a small part on her completely fire album.”
While Kehlani blesses us with some of her best music, other artists are taking the time to live stream their concerts for fans to view, all while in the comfort of their own homes. This month artists such as Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, OneRepublic, Ellie Goulding, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Sam Smith, James Taylor, Meghan Trainer and Tina are all set to perform for this year’s Red Nose Day Special. Other artists such as Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and Sing will also be performing live concerts as well. Who knows how long we’ll be in quarantine but it seems this is the new direction music and live streaming are taking.

Jordan Release Date Delays Due to Pandemic
Air Jordan is known for its iconic releases but after closing their physical stores Nike is delaying many of their Spring release, including the much anticipated "Air Dior" collab with Italian luxury brand Dior. Now online retailers are having to question how is this going to impact their business. How will this pandemic affect how we shop in the future?
Since I was a little girl, I always remembered the significance of Air Jordan sneaker releases. I grew up in an era where dedicated customers would skip school/work to wait in lines for hours just for the newest release. This era was made up of raffles and hypebeasts. During this time, we also saw the growth of the online/ecomm niche that surrounded these huge releases. These drops are still highly anticipated, leaving people counting down the days until they can get the freshest pair of Jays. Unfortunately for many sneakerheads, Air Jordan has decided to delay many of their Spring releases until they can have a more impactful drop.
According to Complex, sources have speculated that these delays are due to Coronavirus- related obstacles. As a way to combat the spread of COVID-19, many Nike stores were forced to close their doors. And although Nike still has an online storefront, nothing beats coming into a physical store on the day of a big release. These delays include one of the most anticipated drops the company has ever had.
For their Fall 2020 show in Miami, Italian luxury brand Dior and it’s Artistic Director, Kim Jones, revealed their collaboration w/ the famous Air Jordan 1’s OG.
The collab called “Air Dior” includes low-top and high-top OG 1’s, as well as RTW (ready to wear) apparel and accessories curated by both brands. The hightop sneakers were said to be one of the most expensive Air Jordan releases, retailing at staggering $2,000 dollars. This release was limited to only 8,500 pairs, each pair individually numbered.
The decrease in big releases has impacted sneaker retailers and resellers worldwide. Without big drops during Spring, retailers are having a difficult time attracting consumers to their online shops. In turn, there is bound to be a decrease in activity via online markets like StockX or FlightClub. There has also been a decrease in prices of many of these limited edition sneakers.
Experts believe that this pandemic will change the retail platform as a whole. There will be more emphasis and utilization of online platforms while people get comfortable with the idea of going outside again. This will result in people flooding to sites for their sneaker needs. It is also predicted that many people will not want to spend big bucks for big releases, leading to a decrease in sneaker prices as a whole. It all depends on the demand for the release. For now, brands like Nike are in a waiting game with the rest of the world.

Classy, Bougie...You Know the Rest!
Music lovers have been raging about this new Houston collaboration! The two Texas-born women recently dropped a remix to Megan Thee Stallion’s song “Savage”.
Houston, we have a problem! Once again, Beyonce (better known as Queen B), has stopped the world once again. We all know that all our hotties have been anxiously waiting for this moment. Megan Thee Stallion has always stated that her dream collaboration would have to be with Beyonce. Her wish indeed came true and dominated social media and the charts.
The original song speaks about women empowerment and how women can be a combination of a lot of characteristics, all wrapped in one. Musically, the Texan rapper uses her go-get-it attitude, along with her ridiculous flow to convey her message perfectly over a beat that is reminiscent of nostalgic hip-hop music videos. The original song topped charts, and it has the app Tik Tok to include on its success. Tik Tok has been an app being used heavily throughout this period of social distancing and quarantine. The remix is making listeners reminisce over how a remix is supposed to sound. Many listeners gravitated towards the remix because of Beyonce, and because the song sounds like a different song. A better one at that! It is the absolute best combination of Beyonce's vocals and Megan Thee Stallion's bars. Let's not forget that although Beyonce is a world-renowned singer, we could hand her a Grammy for Rapper of the Year!
These two black women have topped all of the fans' expectations and have made an anthem that will not be going away any time soon. It has made women all across the globe realize that "If you don't jump to put jeans on, Baby, you don't feel my pain." Megan Thee Stallion's Savage has been one of the top challenges on Tik Tok, but the remix with Queen B might top it. This Houston collaboration is one for the books!

Dark Lane Demo Tapes Review

No one was expecting Drake to release a mixtape. Dark Lane Demo Tapes released on May 1. Dark Lane Demo Tapes is a combination of “some leaks and some old joints from SoundCloud and some new vibes”, says Drake. On top of this out of the blue release, Drake also announced that he plans to release his 6th studio album in the summer of 2020. Drake announcing the mixtape and the album together implies that Dark Lane Demo Tapes is supposed to hold fans over until the summer and keep his name in the media.
Somewhere along the way Drake’s music has changed. His old music gave off the idea that he had something to prove, it showed his hunger to be at the top of hip-hop. On the other hand, the new music sounds like he has absolutely nothing to prove. After listening to the mixtape, it was clear that the intention was to highlight the diversity of Drake’s sound. The mixtape did a good job of showcasing the best of both worlds, as far as Drake before and after he went mainstream. The further down the tracklist you go, the more mainstream the music becomes. Depending on what type of Drake fan you are, you will either love the project or hate it.
Drake fans stand behind him regardless of what he puts out. For some fans, it has become harder to enjoy his music because of how mainstream it has become. Personally, Dark Lane Demo Tapes was mediocre. Every artist is not meant to go mainstream. A common misconception is the idea that you have to go mainstream in order to be at the top. Throughout his career, Drake has reshaped the mold of what hip-hop music sounds like, which is what made people fall in love with his music. But lately his music has not reflected his artistic ability which Dark Lane Demo Tapes proves. This project was disappointing, however there is still hope that the “old Drake” will make an appearance on the new album come summer 2020.

Rodman's Flamboyant Personality and Elite Basketball Abilities Discussed in "The Last Dance"
“The Last Dance” episode focused on Dennis Rodman, one of the most bizarre and fascinating athletes of all-time.
While sports fans have had to make do with no live sports during the coronavirus pandemic, they have been able to take solace in “The Last Dance.” The 10-part miniseries which covers the final season of the Chicago Bulls dynasty was not scheduled to premiere until June, but ESPN moved up its release to give fans something to look forward to. The first two episodes aired on April 19, and they will continue to be released in pairs each Sunday.
The documentary features never-before-seen footage taken by a crew that had all-access permission to film the team during the 1997-98 season, as well as interviews with former players, executives, journalists and celebrities; everyone from Barack Obama to Carmen Electra have made appearances thus far. Each episode blends examining the events of the season in chronological order and the background of a specific member of the team. This emphasizes the numerous differing personalities on the Bulls; the win-at-all-cost aggression of Michael Jordan, the quiet, underpaid and under appreciated Scottie Pippen and the calm, Zen Buddhist philosophy of head coach Phil Jackson who was the subject of one of the episodes released on April 26.
The other episode focused on Dennis Rodman, one of the most bizarre and fascinating athletes of all-time. While he’s best known these days for his controversial befriending of Kim Jong-un, Rodman, who grew up in poverty in Dallas, was a key member of the Bulls dynasty and is considered one of the best rebounding forwards in history. One of the coolest moments of the documentary so far is a montage in which Rodman explained how the ball would bounce differently off the rim depending on who shot the ball. For example, Larry Bird’s shots would spin, and the ball would land in a specific place whenever Jordan shot it.
But the most memorable moment from Rodman’s episode came at the very end when he recounted a story from that 1997-98 season. Rodman had been struggling on the court and he asked Jackson for a vacation in the middle of the season. Jordan relented, but Jackson eventually granted his future Hall of Famer a 48-hour trip to Las Vegas before he had to rejoin the team. Unsurprisingly, Rodman did not return in time and Jordan had to fly out to Vegas to retrieve him. Rodman showed up to his first practice after his Las Vegas bender in pajamas and sandals, but he began to play well again following his vacation.
The fifth and sixth episodes of “The Last Dance” will air on May 3 at 9 p.m. EDT on ESPN, with a censored version airing at the same time on ESPN2. The episodes are available to stream on ESPN after they air and they are also available the following Monday on Netflix for those living outside the United States.

Rooting For Everybody Black

Rapper Olubowale Victor Akintimehin (better known as Wale) and creative director of Pyer Moss, Kerby Jean-Raymond recently partnered to produce a song entitled, “Sue Me.” The music video, premiering on April 22, 2020, has already received over 500,000 views on YouTube and is one of the most radical depictions of race relations that we’ve seen in recent years.
“Sue Me,” is a song that introduces an alternative society in which white people are a part of the marginalized group and black people are in the majority. Nonetheless, writers Kerby Jean Raymond and Cameron Robert still incorporate real-life instances of the racial profiling and discrimination of black people in the 21st century. It comes as no surprise that a musical artist whose work is as intentional as it is creative, would release something this evocative. Moreover, as a fiercely progressive social justice advocate, Jean-Raymond makes very meticulous artistic choices with regard to the dialogue within the music video as the director.
It’s impossible to watch the video without being reminded of the racial injustices in the U.S. The first reference in the film dates back to the 2018 incident of two black men being denied access to a Starbucks bathroom without making a purchase. Prior to showing the footage of that incident, Jean-Raymond manages to “flip the script” in which a white man is arrested at a Starbucks that’s majority black. That’s a story that hasn’t really been told in mainstream media and can certainly lead you to asking yourself “what if?” What would the world look like if that was the relational dynamic between those races and how would that make us feel?

Another unforgettable moment introduced is a video of a man, Aaron Campbell, going live from Facebook in prison located in Warren, Ohio. While filming Campbell laments about the government’s perceived lack of empathy toward those in prison during COVID-19. More specifically, he states that inmates are being denied home confinement for the government’s capitalistic agenda. Incorporating both live footages serve a crucial purpose that is difficult to articulate but is definitely felt. Rage, compassion and a sense of urgency are all emotions that one might feel while watching these videos.
The chorus, “Sue me, I’m rooting for everybody that’s black,” refers to a statement made by actress Issa Rae at the 2017 Emmy Awards, “I’m rooting for everybody black.” It’s safe to assume that the overarching message of this song aims to highlight the necessity of justice, equity and representation for black people. Wale unpacks the depth of these issues in multiple layers, fashion being one of them. One of the lyrics in the song reads “Pyer Moss, I dropped ten on my last visit and half that up at Saks, I favor black businesses.,” bringing attention to the practice of black people exercising a form of economic empowerment through monetary supporting each other. The intersectional nature of social issues in 21st century America is multifaceted, and both Wale and Jean-Raymond managed to capture that in a way that forces viewers to imagine while facing reality and potentially reexamine their surroundings.

The Alternative Experience
Leading up to the year 2020, the energy throughout the black community was at an all-time high. I had witnessed success from peers on a personal level and from celebrities on a global scale…
In a time like this it almost feels necessary to talk about the pandemic that we are currently going through all across the world. Whether you’re rich, poor, black, or white, this moment in time is something that we will remember forever. I have struggled in deciding how to approach the opening moments of this editorial without being too cliché. As I sit in quarantine, in solitude, patiently waiting for a positive shift to happen, I can’t help but to reminisce. Around this time last year when I was preparing to attend fashion week in New York, to be amongst the world’s top creators, the eagerness to be etched in a moment of cultural history was something I took pride in. At the time, this wasn’t an experience that I believed would be vital to my growth and existence in this particular space. Boy was I wrong.
Now, back to reality. This moment in time is just as important to not only my personal growth, but also to the growth of our culture as a whole. Leading up to the year 2020, the energy throughout the black community was at an all-time high. I had witnessed success from peers on a personal level and from celebrities on a global scale. From attending Culture Con, where I experienced an outpour of knowledge and felt an abundance of acceptance, to fashion week where I witnessed a young collective make their stamp in the fashion industry. Naturally, when you see people who look like you and share similar experiences as you succeed, your confidence surges. Then, all of a sudden as our community is gearing up for another year to remind the world that the culture doesn’t move without us, everything stops! At least that is what I thought was going to happen.
Many different emotions raced through my mind, as I am sure they did with you as well. Was the ability to collaborate done? Will live events and shows become obsolete? Will I have to give up what I’ve built just to overcome this? These were a few of the questions I posed to myself in hopes to innovate a way to survive as a creator, but to also sustain content to keep my end consumer happy. In this instance of uncertainty, I took time to step back and observe. Doing this reminded me that we are a group of people who persevere and make the best out of every situation we are forced into. The ability to do so is what separates our culture from the rest and allows us to continue to elevate.
It started with DJ D-Nice bringing entertainment to us live and direct to our households via Instagram. Little did he know that what he did would be the beginning of history that we’d never seen before. Since then, Sean “Diddy” Combs held a dance-a-thon that raised over $5 million for Covid-19 relief. If that wasn’t enough for innovation, Swizz Beats and Timbaland have been hosting battles between some of the top musicians in history. Their most recent battle between Baby Face and Teddy Riley literally reached Instagram Live’s capacity, with over a 500,000 viewers. This put things into perspective and made me realize that creators are going to find ways to create no matter what the circumstances are. In the same thought I began to look at this situation for what it could possibly be foreshadowing.
As we sit at home and time elapses, technology continues to evolve. Small businesses and brands are starting to go under. Does this mean that this way of life will become a norm for society? Will attending New York Fashion Week or Culture Con in the future mean opening my app and attending the events virtually? Will these experiences hold the same value or will these just be opportunities that anyone with a phone can attend? The ability we have to adapt to anything has always been great, but this alternative experience could be the downfall of the great experiences we have grown to love in creative industries.

Fumero’s Physical Comic Skills on Full Display in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season Finale
One of the arcs of the seventh season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is the impending birth of Sergeant Amy Santiago’s, played by Melissa Fumero, and Detective Jake Peralta’s, played by Andy Samberg, first child. It comes as no surprise that the birth of the married couple’s son was one of the central storylines in the show’s season finale.
A blackout hits Brooklyn just before Santiago’s water breaks while Peralta and his best friend Charles Boyle, played by Joe Lo Truglio, are out investigating the cause of the blackout. They try to make it back in time for the birth of the baby via a party bike, while back at the police station Santiago tries to juggle managing blackout protocol and holding off on the birth until Peralta arrives.
Fumero, who herself was pregnant during filming and gave birth to her second son on Feb. 14, 2020, gives a typical solid performance, balancing the serious tone her character would take in that situation very well with the physical and facial expressions that come with being on the verge of giving birth. In general, Fumero has always done a great job of incorporating humor into a usually very uptight character.
Santiago, a female Cuban-American in a position of power, is one of many characters on the show who subtly challenge the double standards we have seen in television characters for decades. Perhaps most notably it has created LGBTQIA+ characters, such as Detective Rosa Diaz played by Stephanie Beatriz and Captain Raymond Holt played by former “Homicide: Life on the Street” star Andre Braugher, whose sexualities are not an overly exaggerated trait of their personalities.
The show was renewed for an eighth season last November, which may very well be the show’s last. Still, its been one of the more consistently enjoyable shows on television for the better part of the last decade, and its nice that its series finale, come season eight or at a later season, will have the necessary time to give the series a fitting end, something that would not have been the case had the show remained cancelled after Fox dropped it following its fifth season.

Say Hello To A New Form Of Live-streaming Thanks to Erykah Badu
Whether it involved reconnecting with old peers, performing, or even doing song writing battles, one artist who stood out the most was Erykah Badu.
Many artists have shifted to live-streaming platforms due to the pandemic. As all thing’s entertainment have been cancelled, many have tried finding a coping method and ways to shed light to their fans in this difficult time. Whether it involved reconnecting with old peers, performing, or even doing song writing battles, one artist who stood out the most was Erykah Badu. This pandemic did not stop singer-songwriter, actress and record producer, Erykah Badu as she is back and is more creative than ever! Erykah managed to pull off a stellar live stream music video with two other musicians. She is the first artist to charge a rate between $1-$3 to watch her perform live!
Not only did she have previous live-streams in her bedroom but most recently, she performed Apocalypse 3.1. While maintaining to focus on social distancing, she managed to have everyone on screen and separated in a colorful bubble. Her vision for this project was to show her audience an exaggerated appearance of how social distancing looks and how all three performers would have to perform live without any mistakes. Being in separate bubbles make things a bit harder as many factors may play by being separated the way they were (picture below). Many fans raved about her creativity, style and uniqueness. Artists such as Cee Loo Green, Keyshia Cole and Diddy have also shown their support for Erykah’s Quarantine Concert Series. Most recently, Erykah conducted a press conference via Zoom to speak on how her Quarantine Series began and how she was able to overcome some obstacles she faced. It was refreshing to see design houses and designers across the globe take advantage of the uncertainty and plow into production mode - thus my interest in Jerri Reid New York - The Black Designer based in Brooklyn New York wow’d instagram with his latest collection paying homage to the Black Is King film which debuted earlier this year in July. I was taken aback at quick of a turn round the young designer produced and released his well crafted designs reflecting some of the films most memorable moments.
