Spirited Away to a New Realm of Beauty

With more time at home, Studio Ghibli gives the beauty world the fuel it needs to evoke new inspiration and beautiful creations.

IMG_6538 - Charlene Piccio.jpg

Now, more than ever, makeup artists and beauty lovers alike are in places where they need to take inspiration from the comfort of their homes. One source of inspiration, streaming services, provides a platform in which artists of all kinds can take away ideas from a wide range of movies and tv shows. Dropped on Netflix and HBO Max in recent times, Studio Ghibli films have become the latest trend in creating beautiful looks that are both awe-inspiring and serve as a reminder of the times currently experienced. A world-renowned movie studio, Studio Ghibli has ultimately one goal: to dive into the human soul and to show audiences the intricacies transcribed through their imaginative stories.

spirited-away-travel - Charlene Piccio.jpg

Studio Ghibli was formed in the early 1980’s when Japanese animators Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki decided to create a work that would serve as a film that not only contained animations, but also kept the narration quality. The term Ghibli was coined by Miyazaki, taking inspiration from the World War II aircraft Caproni Ca. 309 Ghibli and hot Sahara desert air, exemplified through the air blown about in the studio’s animations. Once they realized they could be successful, they set up a studio in Tokyo along with publishing company Tokuma Shoten’s help.

Dreamy, detailed worlds and heartwarming stories embody what makes Studio Ghibli the animation company it is today. Their films contain beautiful, colorful visuals that evoke a wide range of emotions and animations that relate to the human psyche. Some of the most famous Studio Ghibli films have inspired many, including the beauty realm, to show the chromatic, introspective world that the studio has created. Studio Ghibli’s "My Neighbor Totoro" provided the unofficial face of the company: Totoro, a tree spirit taking the form of a rabbit. In this film the spirit shows nature and humanity working together, a message that can be taken in real life and presented through art. "Only Yesterday", another well-known work of theirs, explains the life of a young Japanese woman as she comes across the countryside, visualized through idealistic landscapes and yellow flowers adorning the land. "Spirited Away", the Oscar winner and the most acclaimed of all the studio’s repertoire, provides astounding visuals as the main character travels through the spirit world and encounters many fantasies one can only dream of. No matter what the Studio Ghibli film may be, there won’t be trouble in finding one shot that can provide artistic awakening.

Another Studio Ghibli project is currently in the works and is set to be released in 2021. Based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel, How Do You Live? will be the next film that will add to the extraordinary range of films created by the company.

Is Jeffree Star's New "Cremated" Collection Worth It?

Jeffree Star has recently released his new makeup collection called “Cremated.”

Screen Shot 2020-05-26 at 10.11.28 PM - Anna Levitus.png

Jeffree Star has recently released his new makeup collection called “Cremated.” It consists of a palette with 24 new eyeshadow shades ranging from black and white to grey and brown. Some of the names of the colors are “Angel of Death,” “Death Certificate,” and “R.I.P.” This Palette allows for beauty lovers to create the perfect smokey eye. It retails for about $58 on his website. Alongside the Palette, he released new lip glosses, makeup bags, metal straws and a liquid lipstick. The collection sold out in the matter of minutes and I could understand why.

There has been a lot of talk about his new collection as it has caused controversies. People have mixed feelings about it as they felt it was insensitive or tone-deaf to name the collection “Cremated” during a pandemic. However, Star has spoken out about these comments saying that he has been working on this Palette before the COVID-19 outbreak. Producing makeup takes months to create. It’s not a quick and easy process. In a youtube video, Star said, “For me, this is art and I never come from a negative place, you guys.” Star has also said that if he kept pushing off the release the makeup would have expired.

Screen Shot 2020-05-26 at 10.11.39 PM - Anna Levitus.png

Many beauty influencers went on to test the Palette and lip glosses for themselves. One YouTuber who reviewed it was NikkieTutorials, with over 4 million views on it. She made sure to give her honest opinion about how she felt about the collection despite the controversy. She agreed with the people saying the timing is a little off. However, she thinks this would have hurt people regardless of timing. Nikkie went on to say that “if you focus directly on the quality, it is golden.” I am not surprised because Jeffree Star is known for releasing eyeshadows with incredible pigment formulas.

It’s really up to you what you want to spend your money on. If you can get over the theme of it and focus solely on the collection, you won’t be disappointed. It is perfect for anyone who loves to play with grey tones. The collection is said to be back in stock, mid-June.

Example Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line. Rhianna is a big named celebrity yet many wouldn’t be so likely to just go and buy her product. So her public relations team will send out boxes of the products to select beauty influencers to get them to do a review on the products. The consumer would then tune into their favorite influencers and would get to have an idea of what it would look like on someone that looks like them. See influencers became a big part of the marketing system because of the allure of relatability. When it comes to the use of social media, B2B businesses mainly use Facebook by 89%, Twitter by 75% and LinkedIn by 81% and Instagram is only used at only 33%. When you see someone like you trying something and liking it you are most likely going to want to buy the product as well. Many influencers also decided to purchase the products themselves so that they can keep that trust between them and their audience. When it comes to which social media platform is important, 79% find Instagram important for their influence marketing campaigns. Authentcity is what is selling these products.

Fragrances of The Unknown

Since the summer is almost here, I am always looking for a light scent that will last throughout the day…

If anyone knows me, they know I love perfume. I have been building a perfume collection since I was in high school. Since the summer is almost here, I am always looking for a light scent that will last throughout the day. My favorite perfume scents are floral, fresh and oriental. With these perfumes I am about to share with you, will you be smelling great all summer long. I have many favorite brands of perfume, but Yves Saint Laurent has caught my attention this summer. All these new and exclusive perfumes can be found at Ulta, Belk, Macy’s, Sephora or on the company’s website these perfumes will have you smelling great all summer long.

LIBRE Eau de Parfum is the new scent of an aroma for the individuals who live by their own standards. A reexamination of the botanical fragrance, it consolidates Lavender Essence from France with the arousing quality of Moroccan Orange Blossom, for a one of a kind flower combination supplemented by a note of musk accord.

Mon Paris Intensément is the new interpretation of the great Eau de Parfum. The core of the scent comes from an arousing and rich rose that consolidates with strong dark currant and white musk for an extraordinary aroma that brings out an energetic romantic tale. The new Mon Paris bottle includes a rich ribbon bow shrouded in a serious fuchsia cover, enlivened by the Saint Laurent couture.

Black Opium Eau de Parfum Neon, takes a liberal and dynamic turn on the great Eau de Parfum. It’s a rich espresso that is mollified by an orange scent and by its hypnotizing Dragon Fruit. The bottle is intended to stand apart from the original bottle, highlights a prolonged shape. The notable round window is brightened by a neon pink for an explanation that is both tense and modern look. These fragrances will make you want summer to last year round with each bottle with a different scent and look it will sure end up in your perfume collection as your new go to fragrance.

5 Helpful Tips for Masks & Makeup

Makeup and masks don’t mix well, especially during the summer, so we’ve put together five helpful tips for wearing makeup and a mask.

Screen Shot 2020-05-20 at 11.24.39 PM - Rachel Attar.png

While a beauty routine might seem nonessential right now, wearing makeup helps people maintain a sense of normalcy during this difficult time. At the same time, it is important to wear a mask when leaving the house because it will help protect you and others from contracting COVID. Makeup and masks don’t mix well, especially during the summer, so we’ve put together five helpful tips for wearing makeup and a mask.

1. Lather on Sunscreen

There are going to be more sunny days as summer approaches. Wearing a mask under the sun can tan the top half of your face and not the bottom. To avoid uneven tan lines, lather on a SPF 50 or higher face-safe sunscreen. Be sure to pick one up before summer kicks in.

2. Stay Smudge-Proof with Waterproof Mascara

Touching your eyes is a quick and easy way for coronavirus to enter your body. When you’re in public, you’ll want eye products that don’t require touch-ups. Waterproof mascara doesn’t smudge or budge, so you won’t need to worry about primping your eyelashes while you’re out. Put on a coat of waterproof mascara before leaving the house!

Screen Shot 2020-05-20 at 11.28.01 PM - Rachel Attar.png

3. Keep Moisturized

Look out for chafing while wearing a mask. If you have dry or combo skin, the repeated friction from wearing a mask can increase irritation on your face. A lotion or face-safe hydrating oil can help ease chafing caused by masks. Make sure to moisturize every morning.

4. Lose the Lipstick

Though lipstick usually adds to a look, make sure to wipe it off before putting your mask on. No one will be able to see it, and you’ll run the risk of it smudging on the mask’s fabric and onto your face. A chapstick or lip balm won’t get messy, plus the added SPF will protect your lips from any sun rays getting through your mask.

5. Set that Face

Wearing a full face plus a mask might cause products to gather or crease on your skin. Your face is more likely to become sweaty and oily during the summer, which will make your makeup run. Wearing a waterproof foundation or setting spray will help prevent creasing and running. They’ll set the products on your skin to make sure they won’t move.

Finally, some positive news! Beauty lovers it is now your time to shine because Sephora is officially opening up its stores! Let’s discuss the info that really matters…the who, the when, and the where!

First up: The Who. Sephora is officially beginning its reopening phases since they were forced to shut down in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s been a long 3 months for beauty gurus, and I’m happy to share that we’re starting to see some form of normalcy! As states begin to get their groove back, Sephora is working on it too!

Next Up: The When. 70 stores will be reopening as of Friday May 22, 2020. New and improved safety procedures are being instilled into every Sephora. The, “Sephora Health and Hygiene Guidelines”, include almost fifty safety procedures as well as proper training for its employees. It may not be the average Sephora you were so used to before, but just remember, your safety is their highest priority! Line coordinators will be on guard, no testers allowed, social distance required, and a customer capacity will all be put into place for re-openings.

Screen Shot 2020-05-23 at 8.45.05 AM - Kaitlin Gallagher.png

Lastly: The Where. States that are included in the first stage of reopening include: Colorado, Indiana, Idaho, Mississippi, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Georgia, Alaska, Arkansas, and Alabama. Don’t see your state? This is only the first step in reopening, so more states are sure to pop up in the future.

Sephora is keeping up with the daily heath procedures to ensure every persons safety. Deep cleaning throughout the store will take place every day. All customers and employees are required to wear face masks, and their employees will even have their temperature tested during their shifts. Hopefully I’ll be sharing more info on even more store openings soon!

Big Pore, Little Pore, then Unclog Pores!

Have you been struggling with acne since your teenage years and it has only gotten worse over the years interfering into adulthood?

#1 Pore Strip Brand - Tykaia Rose.png

Have you been struggling with acne since your teenage years and it has only gotten worse over the years interfering into adulthood? Well just to let you know you are not alone. I been struggling with acne since middle school and it has only gotten worst over the years until I decided to go to the dermatologist. The dermatologist helped me out with getting me the right treatment which was a topical acne cream for my face. I recently been trying to figure out a safe way to unclog my pores by not causing a breakout. Pores are little openings in the skin that discharge sweat and oils. Pores can be really painful and disgusting. Just note that you can never get rid of pores but there are ways to diminish them. I would still go talk to a dermatologist, but this should get you started. If you want clean and unclog pores just check out this product! “Owned by Kao Corporation based in Tokyo, Japan. It’s a chemical and cosmetics company. It was founded by Tomiro Nagase”.He needed to make moderate healthy skin items which he did that by purchasing Biore in the earlies 1880s. Biore Blue Agave Deep Cleansing Pore Strips is the newest and latest skincare product from Biore. This product is guaranteed to remove undesirable pores from your nose in a safe way.

Lastly, always wash your hands first before touching your face. Remember I am no expert, but you can never get rid of pores, but finding a way to diminish them is a great way to start.

Sometimes, Messier Can Be Better!

Bad Hair Day? No Problem!

1f3f2ff9efaf367dbfc0f807606f06cd.jpg

Bad Hair Day? No Problem!

Everyone has those days where their hair just is not listening to them when it comes to styling. Whether it is the copious amounts of hairspray being used or simply just sleeping on it wrong, sometimes, your hair just does not want to cooperate. But did you ever think to consider embracing that messiness and that lack of cooperation?

Combating a bad hair day is simple. Let it loose and go the messy route. Messy hairstyles aren’t necessarily “messy”. They just give the impression of simplicity. There are so many different ways to style your hair, but the easiest ones to try out are the low, messy bun, the half-up-half-down bun, and the high bun. You can choose these styles to go to the beach, to a bar, or just at home. These three hairstyles can also be paired with a comfy or a casual outfit. They are also extremely simple to do. The key is to not try so hard to make it look perfect, the messier, the better!

When it comes to styling your hair, sometimes not doing anything to it at all can turn out nicer than expected. Embrace the messiness. Embrace the simplicity. Embrace a relaxed, comfortable, you!

White Women, We Need to Talk. Yes, Again...

White women, it's time to stop the fox eye trend. It isn't cute. It's racist. Here's why.

foxeyes_twitteruser_sprogn - Erica Kay.jpeg

If you’ve been following any beauty influencer on social media in the last few weeks, you’ve probably seen the fox eye trend. It’s a technique where you use eyeliner to elongate the eye both on the outer and inner corners, often accompanied by a shaved then redrawn eyebrow tail to further emphasize the slanted eye look. Cute, right? Totally not racist, right? Wrong.

Now, before I go wagging a finger at beauty gurus, I want to establish that yes, I am a white woman and I recognize that I am speaking from a place of privilege, but I believe in using that privilege to speak up against unjust situations.

Back to the issue at hand. The fox eye trend is meant to emulate an over exaggerated version of an eye shape deemed to be an “Asian feature.” An eye shape that Asian people have been constantly mocked and bullied for. The eyeliner is typically coupled with a pose with fingers at the edge of the eye, which looks like you’re pulling at your eye to make it appear slanted. But, since it’s (mostly) white influencers wearing the look, it’s suddenly trendy and cute.

This is an issue for several reasons. For one, it directly takes a pose typically used to mock Asian people for their heritage and makes it vogue. This isn’t cute; it’s Asian-face (like blackface. The trend exaggerates features to emulate Asian people’s faces. Features that are so often imitated to spew hatred. And finally, it also assumes that the look is only attractive on white women, and that only furthers the notion of a white-centric beauty standard. For years, white women have been appropriating looks, like boxer braids and dreadlocks, and making what other cultures have been mocked and harassed for into an Instagram trend. What was once considered ugly becomes fashionable because it’s on a white woman.

To top it all off, the trend was popularized by supermodel Bella Hadid, whose sister Gigi came under fire a few years back for making a racist gesture against Asian people on video. At the time, Chloe Bennet of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” fame came out against Gigi’s supposed “joke” on Instagram. Her letter explains why Gigi’s actions were so hurtful to herself and the Asian community.

So, white women, please stop this trend. It doesn’t make you look cute; it makes you look racist.

Selena Gomez's Makeup Brand is Hiring A 'Director of Social Impact' for Rare Beauty

Selena Gomez's makeup brand is hiring a 'director of social impact' for Rare Beauty

rare-beauty-lede - Amanda Lou.jpg

Selena Gomez's makeup brand Rare Beauty is looking to hire a director of social impact. The position is about celebrating uniqueness on the company's social media and encouraging everyone to love themselves as they are.

Gomez has been candid and open about her own mental health struggles in the past. Rare Beauty's CEO Scott Friedman said, "When we first began discussing this project, she immediately focused on the ways she could use this brand to help people who are struggling.”

Friedman said the new position will help shape conversations around many of Gomez' aspirations and passions: beauty, self-acceptance, and mental health. He said, "The director of social impact will help us go beyond words and really take action to support mental health awareness. We can only do this if a leader is solely focused on this responsibility. This position is a vital part of holding our brand accountable, both internally and externally." Gomez said, "We had always planned on having someone lead this mission, but we felt that it was imperative to hire the best person for the job now.” More people than ever are discussing how their mental health is being affected during the coronavirus pandemic.

5eaffc2e5785325dec7dde73 - Amanda Lou.jpg

Friedman added there's still a stigma around mental health, which the company want to help tackle. He said, "Many people are hesitant to openly talk about their struggles because it's seen as a weakness or flaw. In the beauty industry specifically, there's an expectation to look a certain way all the time and to alter your appearance in order to mirror celebrities, models, or influencers." The goal is for people to see their differences not as flaws, but rather as what makes people unique, special, and rare.

Gomez will be very involved in the hiring process. He said, "She has always placed the social purpose of this brand at the same level of priority as the products we are developing, so our new director of social impact will work closely with her to help bring these goals to life. As we gear up for our product launch later this year, I look forward to seeing the team rally around and execute on Selena's creativity and vision," he said. “It’s hard not to be inspired by her passion for helping others and we’ll continue to weave that into the DNA of Rare Beauty.”

Milk Makeup Debuts Triple-Tipped Brow Pen

Ah, the fluffy, off-duty-model brow. What’s not to say about them? How we all long for that luscious, brushed-up look à la pretty much every runway for the past couple seasons. A chic and modern departure from the pomade-heavy Instagram brow, simply just brush up your brow hairs for this j’en sais quoi, effortless beauty moment. Well, maybe it’s not quite effortless, and maybe not that simple. Those blessed with naturally thick brows, this is your time to rejoice. Pop some champagne, why don’t you! But for those of us with sparser (but equally valid!) brows, we need to harness the power of makeup to fake ‘em out.

4.26 editorial brows - Emily Hui.png

On April 18th, 4:20 EST, cool-girl brand Milk Makeup debuted the newest addition to their Kush line: the triple brow pen. Available in six colors, this pen features an angled, triple-tipped felt applicator that deposits sheer, buildable pigment, allowing the user to easily mimic hair strokes. This long-wearing, water-resistant formula also contains plant-derived oil, sunflower oil, and aloe to condition your brows throughout the day. Additionally, this product is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, alcohol-free, and fragrance-free.

The Kush Brow Pen retails online for $22 USD, and can be purchased at milkmakeup.com. Whether you brush it lightly through your hairs for a feathery, woke-up-like-this brow, or fill them in for a bolder look, this product can do it all.

The Beauty Industry After CoVID-19

Despite the growing convenience of online shopping, consumers still prefer to try before they buy when it comes to their makeup. Yet, retail beauty is on an indefinite hiatus, with stores like Sephora and Ulta closed for the shelter-in-place period.

4.21 editorial - Emily Hui.png

There’s no amount of internet research on undertones, swatches, or ingredients that can compare to just trying a foundation on your face. The same can be said for serums, or eyeliner, or lipstick; there’s just an unmatched security in test-driving a product before you buy it. You can see for yourself whether the shade suits you, how it wears throughout the day, and how it reacts with your skin, all before committing to the purchase! This is one of the greatest allures of brick-and-mortar cosmetics.

For the average makeup consumer, places like Sephora are the easiest way to try a multitude of products at once. In fact, e-commerce contributes to 15% of all US retail in 2008 but only accounts for 5% in the health and beauty sector. Despite the growing convenience of online shopping, consumers still prefer to try before they buy when it comes to their makeup. Yet, retail beauty is on an indefinite hiatus, with stores like Sephora and Ulta closed for the shelter-in-place period. Launches have been delayed, with data showing that customers are simply not interested in new products right now. Brands with e-commerce infrastructures have quickly announced sales and free shipping, and social media has become even more pivotal to marketing makeup. As non-essential businesses reopen, the hygiene concerns of beauty retail mean that the industry may recover much slower than other retail sectors.

CoVID-19 will catalyze a rapid shift to digital services and technology in the beauty industry. Currently, the industry is rapidly adapting to remote work, with service providers like hair stylists and makeup artists offering online classes and consultations in lieu of direct contact. Artificial intelligence and augmented reality will also continue to play a huge role. Sephora’s Virtual Artist is an app feature that leverages AI and AR to allow shoppers to try on products with surprising accuracy from the comfort of their home. Combined with other features that help you through your skin type or style, Sephora has done a phenomenal job of approximating their retail experience online and sets an example for how the rest of beauty retail will adapt. Although these virtual services aren’t quite the same as hitting up your local Sephora, it can come pretty close.

M.A.C Cosmetics has released a new Selena Quintanilla inspired collection. Selena Quintanilla, an iconic singer who suffered a tragic death 25 years ago, is well known for more than just her voice and dance moves. Her token red lips and studded bra inspired the sequel to the M.A.C x Selena La Reina collection.

Queen of Cumbia, a rich red lipstick featured in the line is exactly what is needed for those trying to recreate Selena’s look. Other lipsticks include, Inolvidable, Selena Vive, and La Reina, which are more neutral tones. Selena is also known for her incredible glow which inspires the gold Extra Dimension Skinfinish.

What would a M.A.C Collection be without a eyeshadow palette. This palette is named after the iconic line in the Selena movie that Jennifer Lopez who plays the singer says, “Me Siento ...Muy Excited.” This eight color pallete is a mix of pinks, reds, and sparkly neutrals. The collection also carries three lip glosses that are holographic and sparkly, one being named “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” one of the singers hit songs.

The sparkly studded bra is one of Selena’s main stamps and this collection includes a shiny black makeup bag that emulates the silhouette of the singer’s studded bra.

Gomez told Amy Schumer that that in its initial launch, the beauty brand will offer 48 different shades of foundation and concealer. She promises it will be “very clean and easy”. She wanted to launch a makeup with so many shades, because she wanted people to feel safe.

She said, “I wanted to start a conversation about how can you make yourself feel great," she continued. "It’s not necessarily about needing these things to make yourself feel beautiful. People of my generation have all this pressure to look a certain way, and I wanted to make a line that took away a bit of that pressure.”

Gomez wants to make sure that their campaigns casts “real people” to promote Rare Beauty products. In a statement, the brand said, “Rare Beauty celebrates individualism and highlights what makes each of us unique. Rare Beauty aims to find beauty in what society considers 'imperfect' and build a community that shapes conversations around beauty, self-acceptance, and mental health."

On the Road to Healthy Hair With Pantene

Our hair doesn't have to suffer because beauty salons are closed-- Pantene provides a product for all of us no matter what your hair type is.

Taking care of your hair could be difficult on a regular day, but during the COVID-19 crisis it only makes it that much harder to have healthy hair. Not many hair brands provide products for all types of hair. Pantene has numeral collections specifically made for your kind of hair. Even during these hard times Pantene is coming out with a product that can help a lot of people.

Colored Hair - Pantene announced that they are released a new collection, Sunlit Blondie. This helps people replenish blonde, platinum, highlights, and pastel hair. With hair salons closed being able to brighten your colored hair in your house is a major plus.

Fine Hair- The Foam Collection has weightless shampoo, conditioner and more that keeps hair from going flat. Heavier conditioners usually leave fine hair looking lifeless and over moisturized. That’s why the Foam Collection is perfect for fine hair, it leaves it looking light and clean.

No Harsh Chemicals- For those who are looking for hair care products with no harsh chemicals like sulfate, parabens, dyes, and mineral oil, The new Nutrient Blends Collection is for you. There are products in this collection for all kinds of hair, from fine to coily.

During this crisis we have to work with what’s available, which isn't much with beauty salons and beauty supply stores being closed. Supermarkets and select drug stores carry Pantene products that work for all of us no matter what type of hair you have all at moderate prices. When quarantining is no longer necessary and everyone is outside your hair won’t look like it skipped a beat. Products are also available for purchase online at Pantene.

Recently, KKW Beauty Fragrance announced the launch of KKW x KRIS, the first fragrance collaboration between Kim Kardashian West and Kris Jenner. This perfume partnership comes just in time for the holiday and follows several collaborations between Kim and other members of the Kardashian family. "Creating a fragrance together with Kim just in time for Mother’s Day was magical! We’ve talked about doing this for years, so to see our shared vision come to life has been amazing. Kim and I have similar tastes which makes working together a dream; we both wanted a classic, ageless scent that is beautiful and empowering for anyone who wears it and I think this fragrance perfectly embodies that," Jenner said.

The woody white floral scent is reflected in the bottle's neutral design. "We chose really fresh, light florals complemented by creamy notes that are personal favorites, and it smells exactly like my mom who always smells amazing," Kardashian explained. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, KKW Fragrance will donate 20% of profits from all sales until May 5 to Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides food on the weekends to elementary school children across the country who might otherwise go hungry. The fragrance will be available online at KKWFragrance.com on April 15 at 12 p.m. EST.
