J.Cole vs. Noname: The Conversation That Needed to be Heard

J.Cole recently dropped a surprise song called the Snow on tha Bluff on June 16th, addressing the female activist, Noname and her recent tweet (that has since been deleted) calling out conscious rappers. This conversation started with Noname addressing rappers who make music on social injustice but are silent outside of the music. But this started a bigger conversation.

J.Cole - Maya Howard.jpeg

J Cole recently dropped a surprise song called the Snow on tha Bluff on June 16th, addressing the female activist, Noname and her recent tweet (that has since been deleted) calling out conscious rappers. My first natural reaction was to be angry because the understanding of the message for me came off as an attack on black women. The original message on how I understood it was, I am a black man and as a black woman you need to educate me on things going on because you didn’t struggle like us black men have, so stop nagging.

USA News Hub - Maya Howard.jpeg

I took to twitter as well as I asked my black male friend to get a different perspective on what was going on. Now I don’t believe this is a time for this divide to happen between us in the black community because divide and conquer is the mentality that has been instilled for years within our community. Yet, the conversation is needed. Many state that J Cole’s message is being taken out of context.

Youtube - Maya Howard.jpg

My friend Larrion broke down Snow on tha Bluff and how the original was a movie from the perspective from a camcorder that was passed around. He states “ It looks authentic but it makes you question if it is real or not.” With social media, we are given a glance at what high profiled people do and create our own reality of what they do and this is J Cole’s perspective. Which is why he feels fake because the perspective in which we see on social media is just a glimpse. This conversation started with Noname addressing rappers who make music on social injustice but are silent outside of the music. But this started a bigger conversation.

Tumblr - Maya Howard.jpg

Many women took the J Cole song as an attack of telling women specifically black women that we should watch our tones and attitudes and educate men correctly. Black women were asking black men to hold their friends and themselves accountable. Some black men understood and pledged to make a change. Others completely ignored what black women were saying. Women are sexually assaulted, assaulted, put into uncomfortable situations and more. Black women will stand in front of a black man and put her life at risk so that she can save him.

Black men need to see that all we are asking is that instead of telling us to be quiet and not nag but to actually listen. We need black men as much as they need us. We don’t mean just your friends, family or women that you are attracted to but all black women because we would protect you. In this time black men and women should not be divided but united together. Just take the time out to listen to each other and understand each other's point of view. You don’t have to agree but at least understand.

"What We Do in the Shadows" Season Finale Ends With a Big Question, But There Are Plenty of Laughs Along the Way

"What We Do in the Shadows" season two finale has the usual laughs, along with an ending that will have ramifications for the next season

What We Do in the Shadows - Michael Rosen.jpg

One of the newest and under the radar comedies just wrapped up its second season, and there’s every reason to believe “What We Do in the Shadows” will keep entertaining viewers for years to come. The show is based off a 2014 German film of the same name, and while the characters are different the show carries on the spirit of the film by being a mockumentary about vampires who live together.

The cast of “What We Do in the Shadows” consists of lesser-known actors, most from England, who have never had a more prominent role. The most noteworthy of the bunch is Mark Proksch, who previously had recurring roles on “The Office” and “Better Call Saul.” Proksch plays Colin Robinson, an “energy vampire”, on the show; a socially awkward, almost-human creature who drains humans of their energy whenever they are in uncomfortable situations. Colin Robinson is often the one putting humans in uncomfortable situations, and as a result he usually gets the best lines in the show.

But the season finale revolves around Guillermo De la Cruz, played by Harvey Guillén. Guillermo is a familiar, a human being who assists a vampire in the hopes of one day becoming a vampire themselves, and is constantly treated poorly by the vampires he lives with. As the second season progressed we began to see Guillermo get more and more fed up with the way he was being treated, and we also learn about his previously undiscovered abilities as a vampire hunter.

Harvey Guillen - Michael Rosen.jpg

By the beginning of the season two finale Guillermo has abandoned his duties as a familiar to go live with his mother. Meanwhile the vampires receive an invitation to an incredibly prestigious vampire event called Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, although they are unaware of the fact that the invitation was sent by the Vampire Council as a trap to execute the vampires for past misdeeds. Luckily Guillermo stops by the vampire residence and sees the invitation, recognizing immediately that it is a trap. He makes his way to the event and intervenes just in time to save the vampire crew, although in doing so he had to slay dozens of vampires and reveal his true skills as a vampire hunter. Although we are not given a lot of time to see how the vampires process this new revelation, the episode ends on a very funny note that demonstrates they may be rather indifferent about it.

How the new revelation is addressed by the vampires and changes Guillermo’s role in the group will be the biggest question heading into the next season. FX announced on May 22 that the series will be renewed for a third season, although it likely will face delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, the first and second seasons of “What We Do In The Shadows” are available for Hulu, YouTube TV and Sling TV subscribers.

Five Films to Watch Right Now

From Killer Mike's "Trigger Warning" to "The Gospel According to Andre," here you'll find a list of films that represent and dissect the issues impacting the black community and fashion community alike.

Today’s sociopolitical landscape has allowed for the emergence of feelings that have been long suppressed by marginalized groups across multiple sectors. Similar to the misconduct of governmental officials to black people, the fashion industry has also been largely criticized for its lack of black representation on multiple fronts. If you’re interested in learning about how these issues intersect, I highly recommend giving these films a watch.

Trigger Warning with Killer Mike

In this docuseries, rapper Killer Mike embarks on a three-day challenge, in which he only consumes black-owned products. This film highlights the highly intersectional social issues involving race and class in America.

Screen Shot 2020-06-16 at 5.48.22 PM - Julian Randall.png

The Gospel According to Andre

One of Vogue’s former contributing editors Andre Leon Talley was one of the only black male editors to reach the level of creative director at a Conde Nast publication, until Edward Enninful. His documentary discusses the successes, challenges, and journeys that Talley navigated as a black fashion professional.

Screen Shot 2020-06-16 at 5.53.11 PM - Julian Randall.png

13th

This heavy yet informative documentary provides critical commentary on a multiplicity of issues affecting the black community. It provides a historical analysis of the governmental failings that have and continue to keep black people oppressed.

The September Issue

The September Issue is the single most accurate representation of the recently called out misbehavior of Anna Wintour, EIC at Vogue Magazine. The Devil Wears Prada does it justice, but this documentary allows us to see it firsthand.

"Dear Class of 2020" Love, Chloe x Halle

YouTube’s “Dear Class of 2020” was an extravaganza of musical performances and celebrity appearances that culminated into an online commencement ceremony for the titular graduating class. While there was never any doubt that superstars like Lizzo and Megan Thee Stallion would deliver spectacular shows, audiences were most captivated by the divine, dulcet melodies of Chloe x Halle.

Screen Shot 2020-06-12 at 11.40.47 PM - otakudoll@aol.com.png

Proving their worth as Beyonce’s protégés, the sister duo performed an enchanting rendition of their hit song, “Do It”. Further embodying what they called “black girl magic,” they were both draped in bejeweled cage dresses crafted by high-fashion designer Zana Bayne. Even the undergarments they wore were the creations of the distinguished brand Venus Prototype. While not as flamboyant or ornate as their fellow musicians, Chloe x Halle nonetheless awed viewers with their vocal talents alone. The class of 2020 certainly felt honored by the sisters’ harmonious brand of congratulating them, turning their remote, unorthodox graduation from isolating to unforgettable.

A Podcast a Day Keeps the Boredom Away

What better way to waste some time than listening to podcasts while you sit by the pool with your friends or go on your daily walk?

This summer has proven to unlike any other. With lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, people have realized that have much more time on their hands than they could have ever imagined. What better way to waste some time than listening to podcasts while you sit by the pool with your friends or go on your daily walk? With so many different genres, there is a podcast out there for everyone. If you are into drama, mystery/crime, or science, spotify can find your perfect fit. A few of the top podcasts today are "Call Her Daddy", "Crime Junkie", and "Joe Rogan the Experience".

call - Hannah Zaremba.jpg

"Call Her Daddy" is on the top of the charts for Alexandra Cooper and Sofia Franklyn's blunt honesty about sex, dating, and all things embarrassing in life. The two New Yorkers talk about everything from embarrassing hook-ups to techniques in the bedroom. With over 80 episodes of content, you can spend your entire summer catching up on the juice these girls have to spill.

th - Hannah Zaremba.jpg

For all those mystery addicts out there, "Crime Junkie" can be your fix. Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat talk about real-life crimes and mysteries in over 100 different episodes. Some of my personal favorites are Episode 8: Bryce Laspisa, Episode 20 Adnan, and Episode 52: Lizzie Borden. Take a nice bath or grab a bag of popcorn and get ready for a whirl-wind of mystery with this podcast.

roe - Hannah Zaremba.jpg

"The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast offers both audio and video as he interviews some of the most interesting people in the world. From Bob Lazar to Elon Musk, Rogan captures his audience by asking questions everyone wants to know the answer to: like why Musk named his child such a unique name! My favorite podcast was the Bob Lazar episode on alien space-craft and Area 51. With the declassification of files from the government, you can try and make sense of the "alien situation" that may be very real or just extremely convincing.

If you are becoming stir-crazy staying at home all summer, podcasts are a perfect way to pass the time.

Vegas Is Back! Everything You Need To Know About The Reopening Of Sin City

Las Vegas is back on the map for all lovers of traveling starting June 4th. The strip is officially back up in lights, and I can’t wait to get there.

Vegas Baby! Las Vegas is back on the map for all lovers of traveling starting June 4th. The strip is officially back up in lights, and I can’t wait to get there.

Obviously Vegas will always be Vegas, but we can expect some differences this go around. In a post-pandemic world, things won’t necessarily be back to normal, but anything is better than nothing.

Some of the greatest hotels will be reopening their doors this week such as the Wynn Resorts (my personal favorite), the MGM Grand, the Bellagio, and Caesars Palace. Casinos will hold half of their maximum capacity, leaving every other chair empty at the slots. Tables will also hold half their capacity, so if you’re going in to play blackjack, expect 3 players rather than 6. Card dealers will actually offer you a complimentary squirt of hand sanitizer in between rounds, how cute!

VegasStrip-e1564766146512 - Kaitlin Gallagher.jpg

Not into gambling? Well, the party scene isn’t that different when it comes to social distancing and maintaining health/safety guidelines. Clubs are not opening as of right now, but that’s not to say they won’t open at all this summer! Social distancing will definitely be enforced. Designated “crowd police” will be on duty to ensure there are no large gatherings. Weird for Vegas, I know, but again, anything is better than nothing! Plexiglass at bars/restaurants, contactless check in, and digital menus will all be offered as well.

All employees will be required to wear a mask, but guests will only be encouraged to. All guests will have their temperature checked upon arrival, and there will even be a COVID-19 testing station with almost immediate results.

Hotel costs are almost cut in half at this point, and airlines are begging for travelers. It’s a win for your social life, and your bank account.

Direct flights are being added weekly, so get online and book yourself a trip!

Betty's Skater-Inspired Costume Design

HBO’s newest eight-episode miniseries Betty is an exemplar of immersive storytelling through costume design.

HBO’s newest eight-episode miniseries Betty is an exemplar of immersive storytelling through costume design. The show’s wardrobe has indeed resonated with its audience, its chic casualness creating an authentic modern setting while enticing viewers to emulate the obtainably stylish fashions. Costume designer Camille Garmendia’s familiarity with urban skateboarding culture inspired these coveted looks, and her deep analysis of Betty’s characters helped to further bring them to life.

Spaghetti-Strap-Tops-Pasties - otakudoll@aol.com.jpg

Betty tells the story of a group of women skateboarders living in New York City, the personalities of whom served as the basis for Garmendia’s costume designs. Adding to the genuineness of the clothing was the characters’ actresses incorporating their own style into the outfits. Nina Moran relates to her character Kirt’s eccentricities, and as such she selected bright, colorful clothing that reflects her happy-go-lucky attitude. Ardelia Lovelace’s true admiration for former president Barack Obama led to her character Janay wearing an Obama Supreme shirt, claiming that it represented personal growth. The boldest example of this blend between characterization and real-life personality is the character Honeybear, a visual artist who wears such outlandish adornments as a necklace made of bike chains and pasties instead of a shirt. Most interestingly, her actress Kabrina Adams confirmed that there was very little difference between her own wardrobe and that of Honeybear.

Kitschy-Button-Downs - otakudoll@aol.com.jpg

Betty has most accurately brought New York’s indie fashion to television screens, enthralling viewers regardless of their proximity to skater culture.

"Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj" Doesn't Miss a Step in new Quarantine Set Up

Although it's hard to ignore the lack of an audience, the sixth Volume of "Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj" continues to cover timely events with a style of comedy and charm that is hard to find in other talk shows

Many late night talk shows have made the transition to filming from the host’s home as a result of the coronavirus. While it is a valiant effort on the part of the shows the absence of an audience, which is such a large aspect of talk shows, is hard to ignore. “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj” is one such show that has recently resumed airing episodes without an audience. However, Patriot Act has remained consistently good during the pandemic and the timely topics discussed by Minhaj are more important than ever.

Perhaps the show doesn’t miss a step without an audience since it wasn’t filmed live in the first place. Patriot Act premiered in the fall of 2018 on Netflix with episodes also being uploaded to YouTube. The sixth season was set to begin airing on March 29 but had to be pushed back due to the coronavirus.

The most recent episode discusses the legal marijuana industry and how it is disenfranchising people of color, in terms of using marijuana and selling it. The fact that people of color are arrested at a higher rate for drug possession than their white counterparts is not a new issue, but a small group of rich, white businessmen running the majority of the legal marijuana industry is. Legal marijuana is already turning into a monopoly and not giving a fair chance to smaller growers, many of whom are people of color. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic only makes matters worse for these smaller growers; since marijuana is not legalized at the federal level they are unable to qualify for federal loans needed to keep their businesses open.

It is a very serious topic that Minhaj is qualified to talk about. Minhaj is a 34-year-old Muslim whose family originates from India, and the topics he discusses have an undeniable ‘stay woke’ tone to them. He earned a degree in political science from University of California, Davis before beginning his career as a comedian. His comedy consists of a lot of comparisons and references that will be best understood by Millennials close in age to Minhaj, but it also has a bit of edginess that will appeal to younger generations. But Minhaj still keeps things unusually light hearted while tackling serious issues. For example, towards the end of his latest episode he discusses a group of Cincinnati celebrities who have financial stakes in the legal marijuana industry, including former President William Howard Taft’s great great grand nephew Dudley Taft. He comments that Taft “looks like a guy who plays guitar in a band named after himself,” before showing that he does in fact play guitar as a member of the Dudley Taft band.

New episodes of “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj” are uploaded to Netflix every Sunday and to YouTube every subsequent Monday.

Virtual Concerts & Fundraisers & Events, Oh my!

We are living in unprecedented times, as the coronavirus pandemic has been sweeping the globe. This greatly changed how entertainment, concerts and other events are being held. Many of us can no longer go to a Broadway show, a movie theater, a benefit dinner or a concert. Events that were already scheduled to happen in person had to be transitioned to online events, many of which are free. Check out this article for highlights from past events as well as a few exciting events to look forward to in the coming weeks.

We are living in unprecedented times, as the coronavirus pandemic has been sweeping the globe. For many of us in the United States mid March is when changes started happening and lock downs began being implemented. This greatly changed how entertainment, concerts and other events are being held. Many of us can no longer go to a Broadway show, a movie theater, a benefit dinner or a concert. Events that were already scheduled to happen in person had to be transitioned to online events, many of which are free.

There have been numerous online events. On April 26th GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group hosted “Together in Pride: You Are Not Alone.” This event featured performances from Kesha, the cast of Broadway's “Jagged Little Pill,” among many others. Throughout the night over $225,000 was raised for Centerlink and other local LGBTQ+ centers. Another event this April was, “Take Me To The World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration.” It was put on by Raul Esparza and featured numerous Broadway stars including an iconic performance via zoom of, “Ladies Who Lunch,” by Audra McDonald, Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski. Yet another event was a virtual benefit via instagram live for Say called “Under One Moon.” Say is a nonprofit organization that benefits those who stutter. The highlight of the night was an appearance by actress and activist Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann.

Looking forward there are numerous exciting online events in the upcoming weeks. On June 27th Josh Groban is holding a virtual concert to sing his numerous hits throughout his career. Tickets will be on sale June 1st, the ticket will include an online access code as well as a T-Shirt for an extra $5. June 7th there will be a free Broadway Tony Awards celebration. Although the awards themselves have been rescheduled this event will be hosted by Tony nominee Lonny Price and will raise money for the American Theater Wing and The Broadway League. On June 6th Barack Obama, Lady Gaga and BTS will be a part of a 2020 Youtube virtual commencement ceremony for graduates. A quick google search reveals even more amazing events, some from local places like orchestras as well as some nationwide events. So please check that out. Stay safe, stay connected and stay entertained.

The Power of The Digital Space

The digital space is slowly, but surely changing our societal traditions.

IMG-1608.JPG

The digital space is slowly, but surely changing our societal traditions. Now that COVID-19 is in the picture, some of these changes might be for the better. For people who are not familiar with the term “brick and mortar”, it is the presence of physical buildings, such as stores, factories, offices, etc. Prior to the pandemic, some brick and mortar stores were struggling financially due to the rise of online shopping. With some malls being closed due to social distancing, many stores will struggle to stay open because they are not generating the necessary revenue to survive this economic crisis. For instance, “J.C. Penney filed for bankruptcy after years of decline and debt”, tweeted @business. Brick and mortar stores depend on traffic and without that it is almost impossible for them to survive.

IMG-1609.JPG

Surprisingly, in today’s society everyone does not prefer to shop online. There is a nuance to physically shopping in stores, like the ability to try on clothes to make sure that they fit, which online shopping does not offer. Despite that, most people still prefer to shop online. This generation is what some people would consider a “microwave generation” because we prefer to have everything instantly. Online shopping falls in line with this theory because you can make purchases immediately and you do not have to worry about large crowds or long lines.

There are more perks shopping online than in the stores. In many cases, retailers offer broader selections and more deals online. A big part of shopping is finding the best deals, which comparatively brick and mortar stores do not have. Brick and mortar stores have fallen behind because they are unable to offer anything that will set them apart from online shopping.

IMG-1611.JPG

While brick and mortar is dying, live streaming has become more popular than it already was. Usually, concerts and festivals would be right around the corner. Since those things can not happen, artists have turned to Instagram and Facebook live to hold virtual concerts, the most popular being the battles. These live battles have caused artists’ streams to increase at a rate no concert would be able to do. With so much free time, people are more open to listening to artists they never heard of or cared for, which artists have taken advantage of.

Platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video have also seen another spike since the beginning of the pandemic. With movie theaters being closed, many people have turned to these streaming platforms. While most movies and tv shows on these platforms are not new, they do have some original films that have competed with movie theaters and cable in streams. For example, Netflix has produced films like Tiger King, Money Heist, When They See Us, and Orange Is The New Black. The digital space is in the process of redefining the social world. Change is inevitable and now that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, change might come quicker than expected.

Looks from the Cannes Film Festival

With the cancellation of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, take a look back at some of the most notable celebrity looks that have come out of the festival's recent years.

In a recent Instagram post by Priyanka Chopra, the actress reflects on last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic this year’s festival has been cancelled. It began in 1939 when the French war drama, La Grande Illusion, was not allowed at the Venice Film Festival. Now considered one of the most premier places for cinema, it is located in the French Riviera and a strict dressing code is enforced.

Although the 2020 Cannes Festival won’t be happening, the years of high-end fashion it has brought us can still be looked backed upon and admired. Here are some iconic looks that celebrities have showcased in the festival’s recent years.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA

Priyanka brought simple glamour to the festival in 2019 at the premiere of Les Plus Belles Années D’une Vie. She wore a white tulle-layered gown from Georges Hobeika, a diamond necklace and earrings, and finished off the look with minimal makeup and hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail.

Crowned Miss World in 2000, Priyanka is best known for her roles in the ABC thriller series Quantico and Hollywood comedy blockbuster Baywatch.

FAN BING BING

Fan Bing Bing - Charlene Piccio.jpg

Fan stunned in pastel elegance at the 2018 opening ceremony. Wearing a mint couture gown from Ali Karoui, she completed the look with De Beers jewelry.

Another high-paying actress in her own right, Fan is also considered to be a global fashion icon. The star of many Chinese award-winning films, she portrayed Blink in the 2014 superhero movie X-Men: Days of Future Past.

LUPITA NYONG’O

Lupita Nyong'o - Charlene Piccio.jpg

Lupita made heads turn with her bright couture gown at the 2015 premiere of La Tete Haute. She wore a Gucci jade green pleated gown adorned with floral embellishments and a deep-cut neckline. The outfit was accessorized with a gold head and Chopard jewelry, and finished off with a magenta lip.

A graduate from the prestigious Yale School of Drama, Lupita’s breakout role was as Patsy in the biographical period drama 12 Years a Slave, earning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

BELLA HADID

Bella’s daring style was on display during the 2016 premiere of The Unknown Girl. Famously choosing not to wear any underwear underneath, she wore a red silk-wrap gown from Alexandre Vautheir. The look was finished off with teardrop-shaped diamond earrings and jewelry adorning her fingers and wrists.

Alongside sister Gigi Hadid, Bella is a prominent model that has collaborated with the likes of Dior Beauty, Chanel, and Jacquemus.

MARION COTILLARD

One can’t talk about the Cannes Festival if they don’t talk about French actress Marion Cotillard. Appearing at the 2012 premiere of De Rouille et D’os she wore a Christian Dior ball gown that had a black strapless bodice, dark navy skirt, and black patent leather belt. The look was completed with Chopard jewels and an 8k white gold watch set.

The new face of the Chanel No. 5 fragrance, she won an Oscar for her portrayal of French singer Edith Piaf in the biographical musical film La Vie en Rose.

Grown-ish Return Delayed Until 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused chaos in the entertainment industry, resulting in delays for many TV and film productions. American sitcom Grown-ish has fell into this havoc, resulting in a later return.

Grown-ish an American sitcom series that follows after ABC’s Black-ish, is about a girl named Zoey Johnson who enters a new phase in her life: college. Zoey quickly realizes that she is becoming an adult and without the help of her family, she must navigate college life through new friends, love interests, finances, politics, even down to her college courses.

Grown-ish has 3 seasons and was expected to return this summer, but in a recent twitter post it is clear that plans changed.

A tweet was posted from the Grown-ish Twitter page saying, “hey #grown-ish fam, while we had planned to be back this summer, we are now coming back with new episodes in 2021. we know that’s a bummer, it is for us too, but we will be back stronger and grown-er than ever in 2021. lets pretend that 2020 never happened.”

Twitter wasn’t the only one to make this announcement, Yara Shahidi the shows lead actor took to instagram saying:

“GROWNISH IS MOVING. We had planned to be back this summer, but we are NOW coming back with ALL NEW EPISODES in 2021” (that’s right around the corner…right?)

While this can be devastating news for viewers that were desperately waiting for the shows return… there’s always binge watching each season for the mean time. Grownish is available on Freeform and Hulu.. in case you want a head start.

Examining Professional Athlete Fashion

Professional athletes are focusing on their fashion choices more than ever before, a trend that may continue with future generations

Serena Williams - Michael Rosen.jpg

Professional athletes are not normally known for their fashion choices. They usually have assigned uniforms they have to wear while on the job, but they do get to choose how to look when the camera is still on them before and after the game. While many well-dressed male athletes opt for a simple suit and tie, some have been known to show off much more flamboyant looks. There’s also no shortage of female athletes who know how to dress off the court.

Serena Williams is the perfect example of someone whose athletic ability is complimented by their stylish drip. She recently headlined Sports Illustrated’s fourth annual Fashion 50 list, a ranking of the most fashionable professional athletes put together by a team of sports and fashion experts alike. Williams explained that her ambition to display her chic, empowering style when she isn’t playing goes hand in hand with her mentality as an athlete. “I always try to send the message of just being confident and being fierce,” she said.

There’s no shortage of male athletes who aspire to look confidence and fierce on the field and through their clothes. Many of the athletes from SI’s list play in either the NFL or NBA. Odell Beckham Jr., Russell Westbrook and James Harden are all ranked very high due to their outfits that range from vintage to latest, designer to unconventional, and masculine threads to feminine apparel. There’s also of course Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback and current free agent. He is most known for his headwear, showing up to his press conferences in everything from a Sunday best top hat akin to a traditional churchgoer from the Deep South to bandanas worn in the style of Rosie the Riveter.

While the bigger focus on fashion for athletes has been much more apparent in recent times than in the past, there are still some early trendsetters who loved to wear more than just a suit and tie. Broadway Joe Namath came about as the New York Jets quarterback in the late 1960s and his long hair and cocky attitude represented the cultural changes taking place in the United States at that time. He was also known for wearing fur coats while on the sidelines. Walter "Clyde" Frazier came up around the same time as Namath and appeared in multiple clothing advertisements. He’s still known for his tastes whenever he wears a unique suit during Knicks broadcasts. Then there is Dennis Rodman who frequently changed the color of his hair and even wore the occasional dress.

Still, fashion plays a much larger role for Millennial athletes than previous generations. Nearly everyone on SI’s list was born after 1980. Zoomers, such as Zion Williamson and Lamar Jackson, are just beginning to take over the sports landscape. It’ll be interesting to see how fashion trends change with the new generation and future generations to come.

112 Jagged Edge

We have received countless Verzuz battles, from Erykah Badu vs Jill Scott to Teddy Riley vs Baby Face. Little did fans know that we’d get a new one. Just a few days ago, Swizz Beats and Timbaland teased fans on Instagram Live with the idea of having two famous R&B/Hip Hop groups come head to head. Which two groups you ask? Music lovers have all been waiting for is set to happen as 112 versus Jagged Edge has been confirmed to battle on Memorial Day at 8pm EST. Fans are excited and debate as to which group has what it takes to win.The 90’s era has always been a feel good vibe, so why not have it on Memorial day?

As you know, Jermaine Dupri signed Jagged Edge to So So Def Records in the late 90’s. Some hits include, “Where The Party At?,” “Let’s Get Married,” “Promise,” and much more. 112 was discovered by Diddy who was then signed by his label, Bad Boy Records. They produced hits such as “Cupid,” “Peaches & Cream,” “Dance with me,” and much more; there’s no telling who will win in this epic battle. Although 112 is no longer a group, some fans are worried if they would all attend the Verzuz battle. It was then confirmed by Daron (former member of 112), that he and Q will not participate due to a legal issue. Could this affect 112 negatively? Guess we have to wait to find out! So pull out your dancing shoes and popcorn because it’s on ladies and gentlemen!

Due to COVID-19, we are all focused on finding various forms of entertainment. Whether it be Quarantine Radio hosted by Tory Lanez, Live-streamed concerts or Verzuz created by Swizz Beats and Timbaland. This battle is a great way to keep fans on their feet and have a great time while practicing social distancing.

Music At What Cost

In the past year, Summer Walker quickly rose to fame like many other musicians at a young age. As a woman, the music industry can use and abuse then throw you away if you’re not the total package.

summer walker - The Coloured Spirit.jpg

In the past year, Summer Walker quickly rose to fame like many other musicians at a young age. As a woman, the music industry can use and abuse then throw you away if you’re not the total package. It’s not enough to just have the voice of an angle anymore, not since sex started to sell.

Many talented female artists such as Lil Kim, K Michelle, and Nicki Minaj have undergone extremely dangerous plastic surgery to their body to appeal to the music industry and its fans. Today, artists are speaking out and freely about their toxic journey in the industry that has led them to their addictions to be accepted and promises to be made a star and make it to the top. Industry professionals have brainwashed women to thinking unless they channel their creativity through drugs or make millions showing their assets, then they had no career.

The most recent is Summer Walker. She’s previously spoken out about how she’s dealt with her newfound fame and constantly being in the spotlight. On her last tour, after dealing with the performance part of her fame Summer only performed at nine of the tour dates canceling the original 29. She then took to Instagram to explain what she was feeling to her fans, “I’m not going to be able to finish this tour because it doesn’t really coexist with my social anxiety and introverted personality.”

Summer Walker - Before

Summer Walker - Before

“I’m a person; I have feelings. I get tired, I get sad and it’s just a lot.” She added, “I want to give you all what I can, so I’m going to keep making music and I might do a few more shows, but I can’t finish.” “I hope that you understand that wellness/health is important.”

summer walker after -

Following this courageous act, Summer Walker decided to take a break from social media after receiving backlash on multiple occasions following her canceled tour and her public breakup with London on Da Track On May 16, it seems she is a new woman. Summer Walker is practically unrecognizable in her newest Instagram video and photos showing off what looks like a new face and body. It makes you wonder, what led her to this new transformation with a noticeably new bigger butt. Is she the newest victim of mental abuse from the industry and social media?

Is she the new Lil Kim? Why is it that the music industry teaches young black women that unless they have curves they’re talent means nothing? It is an industry that makes hit records and millions of dollars on a regular basis and young black women and their mental health pay the price.

Kerby Jean-Raymond has been transparent about his process. He has been vocal about what he wants to do and when he wants to do it.

Kerby Jean-Raymond has been transparent about his process. He has been vocal about what he wants to do and when he wants to do it. He told WWD at the CEO Summit last October that he will have a show when he has something to say.

The founder and designer of New York City-based fashion brand Pyer Moss will hold drive-in premieres for his film, “American, Also”, following social distancing and lockdown requirements. More details on the event and locations will be revealed this summer.

The film, which has been two years in the making, follows Jean-Raymond and his team, partners and collaborators producing the Pyer Moss runway show in September 2019 at Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The show was significant for its location — Jean-Raymond’s home neighborhood — as well as its venue, which has been said to be unsuitable for black people. The trailer begins with a clip of Matt Lauer saying neighborhoods are still segregated and that when black people move to affluent neighborhoods, “The result is ‘white flight.’”

What follows is a behind-the-scenes look at the show’s production with models in hair and makeup, the band rehearsing and voiceovers from Jean-Raymond. He recalled a conversation with an editor in the trailer, who said, ‘You know, I’m not coming to any more of your shows. They’re just so negative.’ And I was like, ‘You can’t see that this is for us? This is for us to see us.’”

The film explores what went into the show’s production, which serves as a backdrop to the greater discussion of the black experience in America. Jean-Raymond said, “It’s always been our mission to show the amount of thinking and laboring that goes behind putting together a collection — we’ve been slowing down the speed of how much we produce and improving the quality of what we produce throughout the years. This film aims to show the love and care our entire company puts into every single moment we create and will show that we appreciate fashion as an art form and communication tool.”

The series itself highlights black people In American culture, the first of which centered around the cowboy, initially a derogatory word used for black people who herded cattle that debuted at Spring Studios in February 2018. The next, an ode to the black family, debuted in September 2018 at Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, one of the United States’ first free black communities.

The third installment, at Kings Theatre, is about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the matriarch and pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll music. Jean-Raymond is premiering “American, Also” during the lockdown as a way to bring the community and New York City together, and also to engage with his fans. It will also be available to the public.

Sandra Oh Elle Magazine

Sandra Oh has been a household name for years, known in the industry for many roles. Most notably, for playing Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy for 10 seasons and now rogue agent, Eve Polastri, on the cat and mouse spy thriller, Killing Eve. Sandra brings a depth of talent, dedication and rawness to each character that makes her captivating to anyone lucky enough to watch her.

Sandra Oh Elle Magazine

Killing Eve is known for its amazing fashion, especially in terms of career assassin, Villanelle, strutting her stuff in Chloé suits and J.W. Anderson jackets. Her outfits boast bright colors, unique textures, and all the latest in fashion. Sandra’s character, however, sticks to more earthy tones, baggy clothing, and turtlenecks. There is a definite clothing discrepancy between Eve and Villanelle, one of intention of course. Sandra joked, “It kills me...I go into wardrobe and see that bitch’s clothing, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get something above Uniqlo? No?” Sandra had a chance to display her own fashion brilliance in a photo shoot for Elle, Canada which will be featured in June’s issue. Sandra graces the cover in sequined Gucci, and inside there is an interview in which Sandra talks about everything from Killing Eve, to social media, and Hollywood representation. Also featured are numerous jaw dropping looks from the Elle photo shoot.

Sandra Oh Elle Magazine

Gucci is definitely a highlight of the shoot, both the cover as well as one of the looks inside boast gorgeous sequined Gucci looks. Another look was made complete with a satin dress from Christopher Kane and heels from Versace. Still another boasts a billowing taffeta dress by Valentino. Possibly my favorite look of all is the silk shirt and leather skirt from Louis Vuitton.

Sandra Oh is an immensely talented actress, she’s genuine, enthusiastic, charismatic, and has classy fashion sense to boot. Read more about it in the Elle Canada June issue, https://www.ellecanada.com/culture/celebrity/sandra-oh-elle-canada-cover-interview-

While several TV shows are delaying or halting production because of the pandemic, the TV industry is still planning ahead. Ryan Murphy, creator of popular TV series such as, Glee and Nip-Tuck, recently announced on an Instagram post on Monday, that a spinoff of his show American Horror Story is in the works.

AHS is an anthology horror series that has been airing on FX since 2011. Each season focuses on a different premise and storyline, usually played by a reoccurring cast of actors. This series has promoted actors like Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, and Evan Peters to A-List status, and even megastars like Kathy Bates and Lady Gaga have appeared on the show. AHS has also had another spinoff, American Crime Story, which is a historical drama anthology series, that started in 2016 with a depiction of the OJ Simpson trial.

While Murphy has not released any details about the spinoff's premise or genre, he did say that instead of each season having a storyline, the spinoff will have "one hour contained episodes." Murphy reportedly hosted a Zoom call with AHS' cast and crew, where they reminisced about the fun times on set, and when people could actually meet up in person. During the call, Murphy announced the exciting news of a spinoff. While the call has not been publicly released, fans are hoping that it will appear on YouTube or some other platform. Especially with the recent Zoom reunions of other TV series, like Lizzie McGuire and Jessie.

Kehlani Releases Quarantine Style Music Video for “Open (Passionate)”

Kehlani's creativity shows the direction that music and live streaming is headed with other artists performing concerts on live stream during quarantine.

She just dropped her latest album and new merchandise for her fans. Kehlani clearly isn’t letting quarantine stop her from putting out some of her best content. One of her most recent music videos “Open (Passionate) was edited herself and was shot quarantine style. Steamy, sexy and visually pleasing with trees and a forest green background, the video starts off with Kehlani soaking in a Jacuzzi with a wine bottle and what seems to look like two mimosas sitting on the side of her arm. Then she’s driving down a vacant highway with her dangling gold earrings and sunglasses. There are moments which capture the eye, when she’s wearing a bold orange dress which brings out her natural beauty down to when she’s standing on top of a car dressed with a dark denim coat and brown Louis Vuitton head scarf giving her an edgy look.

Kelahni’s second part of the track “Passionate,” features her in a much more relaxing setting. She can be seen in the driver’s seat of her own car, bundled up in a two toned puffer jacket that’s grey on the outside and orange on the inside. Although things appear more serene, Kehlani’s melodious voice and captivating lyrics speak to the soul. She sings “It’s only your passion how you move by/You fallin’ head over, right outta the sky/Fatal attraction, you lay down and die/Know how you get, I know how you do it.

If you haven’t streamed Kehlani’s new album “It Was Good Until it Wasn’t,” why not go ahead and do that? After all, Kehlani said in her own words on Instagram that she wanted us to. She posted on her Instagram account 2 days ago saying “it would mean the world to me if you go stream the album, i’m already hella grateful for whatever happens but this would be really insane.”

English singer-songwriter James Blake, who is featured in Kehlani’s song “Grieving” on her new album had some words of his own. On his Instagram account he posted their song together saying “So proud to play a small part on her completely fire album.”

While Kehlani blesses us with some of her best music, other artists are taking the time to live stream their concerts for fans to view, all while in the comfort of their own homes. This month artists such as Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, OneRepublic, Ellie Goulding, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Sam Smith, James Taylor, Meghan Trainer and Tina are all set to perform for this year’s Red Nose Day Special. Other artists such as Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and Sing will also be performing live concerts as well. Who knows how long we’ll be in quarantine but it seems this is the new direction music and live streaming are taking.

The Queerness of Little Richard's Fashions

Rock and roll icon Little Richard tragically passed away on May 9, 2020, and his innovation and legacy in his genre cannot be overstated.

Rock and roll icon Little Richard tragically passed away on May 9, 2020, and his innovation and legacy in his genre cannot be overstated. For decades he entranced audiences with his flashy, energized performances—a key component of which was his trendsetting fashion sense. His penchant for shimmering garments not only defined his aesthetic, but also symbolized his queerness. In fact, his unapologetic femininity was a defiance of the heteronormativity of his time.

Lil%20Richard117 - otakudoll@aol.com.jpg

Little Richard’s queer identity was crucial in shaping his onstage wardrobe. After performing in drag shows under the moniker “Princess LaVonne”, he permanently adopted a more flamboyant style of dress, complete with turbans and capes. When his hit songs “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally” launched him into the spotlight, the brilliance of his sequins and spangles shone even on black-and-white television sets of the 1950s. While he was not free from mockery for his feminine attire, Little Richard was overall a phenomenon who garnered a racially integrated fanbase. Thus, he only grew more ostentatious in the following two decades, indulging in even more sequins and flaunting lamé crop tops and brocade tunics.

Lil%20Richard111 - otakudoll@aol.com.jpg

Little Richard’s toned-down (albeit still lustrous) fashions in his later years were likely attributed to his old age, but they also paralleled his distancing from his own queerness. In recent years he vilified homosexuality, and his diminished brilliance was representative of this retrospective self-hatred. Little Richard’s internalized bigotry is indeed an unfortunate note on which to end a lifetime of rebellious theatricality, but he has nonetheless influenced generations of male musicians to don their own sparkling outfits and embrace their feminine sides.
