Managing Your Mental Health at Work

We all get a little stressed at work every so often. We might have tight deadlines, big presentations or large scale projects that we need to manage or support. But stress, upset and other negative emotions shouldn’t be part of your everyday working practice. If you find that you’re feeling down or experiencing difficulties on a regular basis, you may find that you are struggling with your mental health or that your mental health is being impacted. Of course, your mental health and wellbeing is of the utmost importance, so you should take measures to maximize your wellbeing in the workplace wherever possible. Here are some steps that will help with this.

Reach Out for Professional Support

If you feel that you are struggling with your mental health in any way, shape or form, it’s absolutely essential that you reach out for professional support as soon as possible. Sure, mindfulness and the best tea for mind can help. But when it comes to mental conditions, you will need professional support. You should treat this as seriously as any other health issue. All too many of us struggle silently, when medical professionals can help us to get our lives back on track through a series of diagnoses, treatment and support. Your doctor is a professional who can officially diagnose any underlying conditions that you may be suffering from. They can explain any conditions found to you and can then set you on the right path towards managing your condition and improving your day to day life as a result. You may find that your doctor prescribes specific medication or refers you to therapy. Some will offer a combination of the two approaches. There are countless additional sources of support out there too, ranging from charities to support groups and helplines, so never feel alone in this.


Consult Your Manager

In regards to work, when you’re struggling with your mental health, you should consult your manager. They’ll be able to listen to any concerns you have and can help to resolve issues at work that may be making your mental health suffer. For example, if you’re being overloaded with work and are under pressure from tight deadlines, they may be able to redistribute work more evenly across the workforce and lift pressure from your shoulders. They may also be able to help resolve any office disputes that may be causing you to struggle.


Consult HR

If you are unable to consult your manager for any reason, you should reach out to your company’s HR department. It’s the HR department’s role to resolve any issues and ensure that the workplace is a safe and suitable place for anyone to work within. They can resolve larger issues and help you along the way to a more comfortable work life.

Of course, these are just a few steps to take when you are struggling with your mental health. If you are fine at the moment, you should undertake more precautionary actions, such as scheduling and organizing your work, managing your work life balance and helping to maintain a positive working atmosphere and environment!
